I went with the M20 R5. The top rating on this light was 320 lumens. The reason I went with that model rather than the "updated" X model was that the 320 has a four-hour runtime, while the M20S-X version (which boasts an "improved circuitry") has a one-hour runtime at 500 lumens. Actually, the S-X version runs only five minutes at 500 lumens, then drops to 300 lumens! I determined that I'd rather have 320 lumens for four hours than 500/300 for one hour. Most people can't see the difference between 320 and 500 lumens anyway. The 150-hour runtime at 12 lumens also is a major selling point on both of these lights.

If it runs only for five minutes at 500 lumens and drops to 300 after that, I'd say the overall power consumption is similar to running a steady 320 lumens, well, chinese LED lumens. Where do you think does the difference in runtime - one hour vs. four hours - come from?

I have a M20s R5. The box shows a low run time of 600 hrs and high of 4 hrs. The specs are ANSI according to the decal on the box. I think the times are so long because the light has a lot of PWM. On low it's almost like a strobe light. You can see snowflakes and rain drops moving slowly in mid air. Hopefully the XML models do not have a visable PWM or it's current regulated and thats why they have shorter run times. Just a guess.

I know this is an old post. For what its worth, the Olight M20X has a more usable beam because of its flood effect. This is better suited for midrange tactical target identification thus the reason why all the newer Tactical lights areusing the XML.

However Olight has managed to not only create a flood light light, But the Olight M20X throws better than most do using the Xpg-R5 such as the Fenix TK15.

The difference i n brightness isn't very noticeable between 320 and 500, especially when more of the lumens are going to the spill beam. The runtime of the M20X, however, is simply too short. Automatic disqualification for me.

May I ask Slumber Pass.. is this based of your opinion, or are you making a direct comparison having the two S and X Olight M series. You cannot be of a closed mind if you have not actually tried it out for yourself. Both the M20 S and X lights are superior no doubt about that, however they both have thier place. The flood ie spill is notably brighter than the M20S using the XPG-R5 VS M20X newer olight model but with same platform.
