Sounds kind of like the 3D printers that can use liquid or paste like ingredients to print out batteries of almost any shape, among other things.
Of course, like any new battery technology, the challenge is in getting it to be economically viable and have a feasible implementation. Otherwise we'd probably all be using antimatter power cells by now, or something. ;)
If this works, and it looks like it should, the applications are endless. I think it's interesting that research from America isn't reported by an American news agency, but by Reuters in London.
I heard about the printed batteries (somewhat similar concept to painted) on NPR sometime last week.
Of course I've heard about the 3D printers previously through open source hardware info sharing and using the Arduino Mega 2560 board. My avatar is a picture of its microcontroller, the ATmega2560.
That is, I don't think it has much to do with being a news source from the UK and not the USA. Either way, most of the general public probably don't care beyond the novelty of the concept. I personally don't care too much beyond its viability/feasibility, which remains to be seen.
