After reading the Photon 101 thread from 2007 (here... http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?165349-Photon-Freedom-101) I wanted to try the 50% mode.
From the thread, here's how to do it...
"50% Mode: From OFF Push until “first light” and then Release quickly. You can now Push & Hold until it reaches the level you would like. It will be using half the power as usual, so “full power” is 50%. This effects all levels and the blinking modes as well. You can check that you are using this mode by setting it to “full power” and waving it back and forth. In 50% mode it will look like a dotted line (strobing). In normal mode it will be solid. It will return to normal mode when it is turned off."

It doesn't work. Okay, I have the light, out of demo mode and on default (click once for on and again for off, able to ramp, etc.) mode. It's off. I press and hold the button until the first bit of light is seen, then I let go quickly. It's now in the dimmest setting. Pressing and holding ramps it up to full power (100% power, not 50% power) unless I let go. I tried waving the light at full power, thinking maybe I did it right and the 50% looks like the 100% power. Nope. No pulsing beam, no half-power light. Does mine (I bought it in 2011) not have this feature?

EDIT: I tried with all eight of my freedoms; none of them have the 50% mode.

I just tried it with my two Freedoms, and it works perfectly. I also tried it on my brand new Rex Light and it works on that one two. I am not sure why you are having trouble. I did figure out that if you hold the button too long the first time it will ramp to 100%. You have to release the button at the first point of light.

Hope this helps.

Got it to work. Turns out that when my wife replaced the batteries (in all of them but one) she replaced the stock two 2016s with one 2032. So the 50% mode doesn't work with 2032s (apparently) because I just replaced those with fresh 2016s and it works fine. Great little lights.

Hmm, 50% mode should work with 2016's and one 2032. At least mine do. Since the output is 1/2 as bright using a 2032maybe its harder to notice when it first lights up?
