photovoltaic panels

Can someone tell me the difference between photovoltaic panels and solar panels or are they the same thing?

I believe that any panel that converts sun (light) energy into electricity would be considered a photovoltaic panel (though there are various designs and technologies employed). A "Solar Panel" could be a Photovoltaic panel, but a thermal panel (one that converts sunlight into heat ) could also be considered a solar panel; So the terms are not strictly interchangeable.

Yes they are the same thing. Photovoltaic is the correct technical term. Solar panel is a popular name for the same thing.

This sounds right to me. A while back, I put together a couple of small solar/electric home systems, but I'm sure no expert.

The CPF Green Forum would probably be a good place to ask. I'd try the Solar sub-forum.
