So I'm toying with the idea of buying my grandpa a Zebralight SC600 and giving him a Pila Charger with some AW 3100 batteries.
But he's old, but tinker. He fixes equipment. I bought him I believe, an EagleTac AA light a few years ago. Cant remember exactly what it was. So long ago. Anyways uses at work all the time, but I found out, the flashlight has issues now turning on and off. I believe he said has something to do with the twist head operations. So I'm guessing worn contacts.

But I am concern about the safety of using li-on for him. Lets say he forgets to remove the charger from the wall with the batteries charging. Is there a possible issue with it burning down the place? Or will the charger stop charging?

I may just get him the Jetbeam PA10 or Zebralight SC51, since I know he has a crap load of AA batteries....:sick2:

FWIW. I have friends that have more than a passing interest in flashlights and I would never get them into li-ions. I know in the back of my mind that they wouldn't be willing to put in the time or effort to ensure their safety. Can or will your grandfather be willing to use a DMM regularly, monitor charging? I base my charging on when I will be within visual range of the charger,...until completion.
You seem a little anxious with just the idea, imagine how you'll feel if you put it into practice. I'd stick with AAs!

+1 ..........
Get him a light that uses AA's, some Eneloops, and a charger if he needs one and call it a day.
You'll sleep better not worrying about the possible LiIon problems. ;)

+2 Less worry for you and your grandpa. Keep it simple
