Hi everyone
I have a Solarforce L2 torch and have an extension tube fitted. I can run 3 x 3v or 3 x 3.7v batteries. Can any one advise of the brightest bulb to purchase with this configuration. I have heard that some LED's regulate the power so no matter how many volts are used, the output is far less.
any suggestions welcome

An excellent site to learn all about rechargeable batteries, the good, the bad, AND the ugly. It's especially important if you are going to be using lithium-ion rechargeable cells in multiple cell configurations, as those can be a bit dangerous if not balanced (the same charged voltage), so do yourself a favor and spend some time reading up on those.

thanks very much for the reply. Ive looked at all the jargon and im ashamed to say that it's left me feeling very confused. I know this will have been asked a million times before but......What is the recipe for an outstandingly bright torch. If I use 3 x 3.7v am i just getting a bigger capacity but still 3.7v. Also would the led be brighter with a higher mAh or is this just the batteries capacity. Finally once ive figured out the most powerful way to drive it, given my torch model....what led assembly would i need. I know these are probably basics but i'm very confused. Thanks for your patience
 
I'm actually thinking of buying the solarforce l2 with cree xml t6 led and with extension tube which will fit 2x18650. This drop in module has a driver that can handle 3-8,4v input others can handle 3-18v etc so you'll have to look at specs from dealer on the specific drop in. I have several flashlights with the XML T6 emitter and I would recommend it if you
want a lot of light. But with due to the size of LED and such a small reflector it's going to be a floody light.
If you want a tight focused beam you could go for the ex.Cree Q5 using the same reflector and you'll get less total output but a longer throwing beam. And regarding mAh = the total capacity of the battery but the higher rated mAh, the higher current should you be able to draw from it, if it's good quality batteries.
 
Thanks. Ultimately i'm after a very powerful focused throw. I think i'm right in saying a longer bezel would achieve this. Should i be going back to the drawing board and buying a new flashlight. Don't want to go any bigger than 3 x CR123a. I'm a little lost. Would i be better sticking with a single 18650 2400mAh or 3 x 3.7v @880 mAh each. How do i achieve the ultimate powerful throw. Do i sort the battery config. first then the drop in or the other way round.
I know these are probably basics but I'm new and confused

Dan, don't sweat it, everybody is a lttle overwhelmed when they first find this site. There is a lot of new and somewhat confusing information to absorb. So, the best thing is relax and not be in a hurry (easier said than done, I know).

First, tell us a bit about how you want to use your new light. You say you want a focused beam, so you it sounds like you want to spot something far away?

Just so you understand, about 95% of our new members say the same thing when they come here. They want the brightest torch that will throw the longest distance :). It seems very impressive, and it is....... but ultimately it might not be as useful for everyday use, so I'd recommend that you think about how you want to use your light.

Do you want multiple levels? A single level drop-in module is usually less expensive, but sort of a one-trick-pony, while a multiple level drop-in allows you to tailor the amount of light to the individual task.

Look at the UI (user interface) for multi level drop-ins. Does the high come on first, or does the low come on first? It might make a difference to you. Do want a strobe?

LEDs come in different tints these days, from cool white, to neutral white, to warm white. The cool white drop-ins are generally the brighter, but the neutral or warm white drop-ins can be more pleasing to the eye, especially if used outdoors, because they tend to render browns, greens, and reds more faithfully.

If you want "ultimate" throw, then an aspherical lens is a relatively inexpensive way to achieve this.

You are right, the mAh rating is the capacity of the cell. Different drop-ins for your L2 are rated for different voltages, just match the voltage you plan on using to the drop-in.

Mainly, spend some time reading and absorbing, and don't be in a hurry. It takes time to put together the "perfect" torch, so look around and have fun.
 
Dan, I had a 3 x RCR123 flashlight (ultrafire 501c host) with Cree Q5 or R2 (cant remember but rated 250lumen) and an aspherical lens but this baby gave me a throw of 700m compared to maybe 150m on the Cree XML drop in(rated 520lumen). I tried the lens on the XML drop in but it didn't work at all. But it was actually useless to me useless to me so I decided to sell it, but the the Cree XML T6 + ultrafire 501B is being used everyday! :-)
I guess it's all up to you, what you're after as Derek said.
 
Thanks very much for your patience. I'm after a long concentrated powerful throw for searching long distances as part of my job. A single level is all I need due to the single type of task being performed and don't want to cycle through. I much prefer the cool white LED. Do I stick to using a single 3.7v 18650 2400mAh or 3 x 3.7v with a high mAh. Do I need a new bezel assembly to achieve a longer throw rather than flood.

No I think your solarforce l2(right?) will do fine. I'd recommend you to buy a Cree XR-E R2, I think it's the XR-E that has the tightest beam but maybe some expert could verify that.
I've seen it with 3-18v input then it doesn't really matter which batteries you decide to choose. Dx has some cheap aspherical lenses you could try, that's where I bought mine.

But if you want even more powerful and still have a good throw you'll need a bigger LED such as the SST-50, SST-90 and the XM-L but then you'll also need a bigger reflector to maintain a tight beam.

The sst and xm l you mentioned, are they a D26 fit or would I need an upgrade. Also if I had an LED with a range of 3-18v would the output increase with more voltage or mAh.
 
No the output is depending on both batteries and the LED; let's say your led is an XM-L and is driven at 3,35v and 3A this means you have ~10w on the LED (P=UI) in this case you'll get ~1000 lumen from it. But 3A is usually more than what cheap 18650 batteries can handle solo so a 2x18650 is a good combo if you want to maximize the output for example the XM-L. My ultrafire 3000mAh can spit out about 2,2A...

Yes, I've seen both SST-50 and SST-90 and the XM-L in D26 drop in's but you can't as I said earlier get a tight concentrated beam out of them, and you can't maximize them unless you use for example 3x18650:SST90(30w,2250lm), 2x18650:SST50(15w,1300),
2 maybe 1x18650:XM-L(10w,1000lm)

The bigger the die of the LED is the bigger reflector you'll need if you want a concentrated beam, correct me if I'm wrong but that's my experience. Also the bigger the flashlight is the better it acts as a heatsink.

I'd go with a single 18650... x3 rcr is more to manage, and can be more dangerous.
x3 3.7v= 11.1V and still 880mah, not 2400+mah.
mah= runtime.. more mah, more runtime

yes, always sort out what batterie/s you are comfortable using first, then choose the light/drop in- IMO

 
I can't really agree with you on the batteries, isn't getting the right light source and size of the bezel the main priority then adapt batteries after that....
Of course it's a matter of personal taste but I find it's more logical doing it this way.

my statement above, is just my opinion-Not Fact... I should probably reword it to reflect that.

doing it your way works also, no doubt about it.
One thing I'll add: I'll adapt to the drop in, if it's only available in that configuration, and is a really good performer. (like %33 more lumens or throw... something significant.) I'm willing to lose a little performance, to benefit from easier useage and maintenance of the light/batteries. (and runtimes in the case of x1 18650 vs. x3 26340)


it does really come down to personal preference... no right or wrong.
 
I'm very impressed with the ultrafire 501b above. I'm considering trading in my solarforce L2. I've seen them on a common auction site but they're suspiciously cheap. Anything I need to be wary of? Is the 501b a D36 reflector? And is it smooth or op? Thanks again

Scrap that I've just noticed that its a d26 drop in. What then would be the benefit of increasing my bezel from the standard d26 to a d36.

No the ultrafire 501B is just the bezel and is just as good/bad as the solarforce. What I wanted to demonstrate was the different beam pattern in the XM-L and the XR-E in the same D26 reflector. Both these drop ins will probably fit your solarforce L2. If you liked the 501B then you should order an XM-L T6 but in close quarters the more floody XM-L dominates but the XR-E has at least twice the throw.

Here's the XR-E compared to my other throwers, all 3 have very good throw 300m+

Cree XR-E(3w, 26mm reflector) + 2x18500 batteries:

Here's on an open field, distance to hotspot is about 50-60m:
SST50 @ 15w(1300lm), the hotspot travels about 4times as long:

It's not as blue(6500K) as the camera makes it look but defiantly cooler than the SST-50(~5000K?)

What's the current drop-in in ytur solarforce l2 now btw? If it is the R2 led then you might already have the best thrower in that size.
 
Not sure. The flashlight is at work and I'm not. Pretty sure it's a cheap one as its a replacement for the original
