The "Do not eat" exhortation is a modern continuation of the tradition of ancient taboos propagated by most cultures against eating kidneys and livers. This was an excuse for these relatively tender meats to be surrepticiously horded and eaten only by the older tribal headmen with fewer or bad teeth.

Silica gel can only be properly eaten by senior union, corporate, governmental officials and by tenured repeat groupies favored by prominent rock bands.

I usually use those sillica packets to toss into my ammo boxes.

I used to store all my alkalines in the freezer. Then I noticed that a lot of my Duracell AAA batteries started leaking acid! This includes both regular Duracells and Ultras. I'm talking about 6 leaking batteries out of an 8-pack, two different 8-packs on two separate occasions 2 months apart, where the packs were purchased at separate times.

Since then, I've stopped freezing batteries.
