I am looking for some durable yet reasonably priced (less than $50) AA and AAA lights. I'm just looking for simple hi/low, 1 or 2 cell lights. I have looked at so many that my head is spinning. If I could get 10 or so recommendations I would greatly appreciate it. My main concern is durability, then output. Thanks.
 
I was just thinking the same thing ----
and a few minutes ago I happened to run across the new Quark Mini lights
that are about to come out. They look interesting. They do have more modes that just high low, but the flashy flashy blinky blinky strobe modes are hidden, so you don't ever have to mess with them unless you just want to.
They show to have a pretty low - low mode with dang long runtimes, a medium and a high $39 --
Or, you could take a look at the Romisen RC-N3 II from shiningbeam.com
It will run on either 1 CR123 or 2 AA's -- $23

And yeah, there are a ton of choice out there --
What exactly are you looking for?
The brightest you can get?
The longs runtime you can get?
Throw?
Flood?

More information would get you better answers
 
Durable, AA, 2 mode clicky, ~$50, the first thing that pops in my head is the Fenix TK20.

4 Sevens is also having a sale on quarks right now too, if you get the tactical version, it will in a sense be a 2 mode light.

You could also get a nitecore D10 from 4sevens for just slightly over $50 w/ their discount. although the whole ramping UI may seem a little confusing at first, it is very simple to operate as well as go from just low to high

A zebralight H501 is also a good edc if you wanted a floodlight, although it has 3 modes

For AAA's, I like my Fenix E01 and LD01 Stainless (although that one is 3 modes also). They're both solid. You could wait on 4sevens Preons as well

What will you use the light for?
How will you carry it?
What kind of runtime and beam pattern?

If you are looking for more of a pen/keychain light, look at the 4seven's Preon kit (8% off coupon at 4sevens is "CPF8").

If you want more of a holster/pocket light, look at the Quark AA^2, Fenix LD20, Nitecore D20, and similar.

I am a welding inspector on the night shift, so i use a light all night. I prefer pocket carry. I am using am using a 3xAAA Coast right now, and it can be too bright sometimes. I have all but quit carrying my L1 Digital Lumamax because of the sharp edges and it will twist on in my pocket (and I think they are overrated), but it is about right as far as output. I would like at least 4 to 5 hours on high.
 
They should be similar in output.

I'm guessing you want something similar to the L1 in size? If so, then look at a 1 AA powered light. The Fenix LD10 is a good choice, so is the Nitecore D10, Quark AA, Jetbeam Jet I, Liteflux LF5 XT, and a couple more lights.

The main differences between them are the beam pattern, output modes, and size. For example the Liteflux has a smooth beam while the Jetbeam has a more throwy beam.
