i have a friend who bought a 00' crown vic ex-squad car & after some long searching, i have found that the stock 80w post spot light (par46) is not only unreasonably priced, but of an extremely short life time (100hrs).... unacceptable, lol. i was wondering if anyone here has done a HID mod on one of these, and if so, any advice? i HAVE found some PAR46 HID 35w bulbs available in the $200 range... i'm sure after more searching i can find 'em cheaper, but what about supply wiring and mounting? any ideas?

check the unityusa.com site. Odds are the light is one of theirs. Unity's lights were on Radio Cars when they were chasing Dillinger

Yes i looked there 1st, was very expensive and bulb life was only 100hrs. they DO have a HID version but won't work as a retrofit, and the HID kit costs over $800.

This one is rated for 300 hours.

TYVM 2filthy3, i took a look @ the sight and that looks like an ideal replacement until i can figure out an HID solution to this issue :D

Mine has a replaceable H3 bulb. Are you sure yours is a sealed beam? It might be cheaper than you think to replace it.

I'd stay away from HID because you're not going to want to deal with warm-up or leaving it on long enough. When I use mine it's normally in brief bursts, which will be bad for an HID system.

yes, i'm sure. i've pulled it & checked the spec's on the back of the bulb. i WISH it was a H3 cause then i could do the HID mod easily. yes i do know the ups & downs of HIDs, the intended use of this lamp will be in bursts of 30 mins or more so burn duration time isn't an issue, brightness & bulb life are. so idealy HID would be perfect, just gotta find the parts! :) but ty for your info.

Unity makes an LED retrofit bulb too. Hella lighting makes a round headlight that uses H3 style bulbs. I'm almost positive par46 is the 5inch 4-lamp headlight systems for cars size Hella's high beam that uses H3's should work. you could look for an led headlight replacement lamp too

well, i'm looking for highest beam output/throw and maximum CP combined with long life, so pretty set on HID, power consumption is not a worry since the car will always be running. and as far as headlight replacements go, the idea is all good but i don't recall ever seeing a non-fluted headlight, so not as effective for a spotlight. but tnx for the suggestion, i'll look into it.
