Princeton Tec SCOUT -- On Ebay???

Candle Power Forums

Help Support Candle Power:

It says it just came out, and I just looked on the PT web site and it hasn't shown up there. Typing "princeton tec scout" into Google finds a few stores who claim to have it.

It looks like kind of a silly light. It says in one place that it's powered by 4 lithium coin cells and further down that it's powered by 2 cells. It also says it weighs 2 ounces. Since the Aurora weighs 2.7 ounces and uses three AAA's and has three LED's instead of two, the Scout gives up 1/3 of its output and sticks you with much higher battery expense to save just 0.7 ounces.

I wish someone would make a headlamp powered by a single AA or AAA cell and a boost converter like the Arc AAA or CMG Ultra. Maybe I'll try modding one of those cheap ebay headlamps by putting in a Micropuck or something like that.

Update: the other store descriptions all say 4 coin cells. I didn't notice any specifying what size cells though. If four CR2032's, total energy capacity is a little higher than one alkaline AAA, but costs maybe 10x as much...

What scared me away are the coin cells. When it's all said and done, I'd personally still prefer AA/AAAs...

EMS has them in stock. I agree that the battery choice is poor. I also like AA/AAA instead.

Having seen the Scout, I can tell you that it is much smaller than the Aurora. The battery choice is always an issue around here - in the same breath, 123's are not too expensive?

It uses 4 coin cell's - 2032s.

I think that it is a slick little light, and I like the idea of the built in clip.

AAA's are a bit more diverse, but beyond the weight difference, I really like the much smaller size.

I'm still waiting for Santa to give me a PT Aurora which runs off 2xAA or 1X123a. There is a severe lack of lightweight 2xAA headlamps. Maybe if I'm a good boy, he'll make it fully regulated....

That said, we'll probably be onto LS headlamps shortly.

I bought one yesterday at the REI in Arcadia, California. I need it like I need hemorrhoids, but since it is new and different I bought one anyway.

It has an interesting battery arrangement: two sets of two 2032 lithium cells each drive one LED. You can remove one set of cells and run only one LED but I don't see the point in that. I thought they would be wired in a series/parallel configuration but I was wrong.

The brightness/color of each LED is about the same as the Aurora, as are the five modes (3 brightness levels plus two blinking modes).

The case halves are held together with a single phillips screw, requiring of course a screwdriver to change the cells. This is a minus in my book.

The packaging says waterproof, but there is no rubber seal between the case halves. It's plastic on plastic.
