I just received the Princeton Tec Surge. Am I being too picky or does anyone agree loading the batteries is one of the worst designs ever?

Its a PITA, but you don't have to do it too often (unless you use it for several hours a day), and with practice, it gets easier. There are some compromises with the light, but for $20, it is still the best value going for a small high output light.

I am new to the board so help me out.............what is a PITA?

You can make it much easier to remove the holder if you cut 3 - 4 grooves in the plastic prongs on the holder with the edge of a file. Your fingers can grip the prongs to remove the holder more easily without slipping.

This tip doesn't help load the batteries, but it does make it easier to get the holder out of the light.

I love the light output of the Surge, but have to agree that the battery holder is very poorly designed.
