Hello CPF members,
I recently ordered a Jetbeam Jet-I pro V3 and never used 14500 batteries (used alkaline or e2); today I received my TrustFire 14500 900mAh Li-ions and after charging them I put them in my flashlight but light didn't turn-on. I also noticed that they are slightly taller than regular AA batteries and therefore the tail cap was twisted in its place a little tight. At first I thought since the blue plastic cover of batteries are wrapping the battery's both ends the problem is the connection of the ends and that's why i trimmed both ends plastic wraps. Now when I close the end cap flashlight stays on in its lowest settings and the switch is not responding (as soon as I tigh the cap, the light comes on and the switch doesn't respond) if I put regular batteries flashlight works normally. Any suggestions? Thanks,
E.

By trimming the plastic you are making the connection directly to the battery tube and bypassing the switch, which is why you can't change modes.

The Trustfire protected 14500 is probably too long for this light; I have one and have found that I get good results with the AW 14500.

You need to be very careful about removing the insulating material from Li-Co batteries, because this can increase the chances of a short across the battery tube which will result in explosive off-gassing with flame.

I would consider not using the Trustfire 14500 at all unless you can be sure that no short can occur.

I found that JETBeam tolerances are very tight. I have a RRT-0 and my protected trustfire RCR123 will not fit. Others report that the protected AW cells will fit. I guess it proves that it pays to keep to quality cells.

My Jetbeam has a problem with SW on first time using. It's a lemon and
I exchange with another one.
You can try another Li-Ion 14500 battery.
My Jet I PRO V3 (order on Oct 2009) work fine with Ultrafire 14500.
AW 14500 would be better.
If you still have problems, contact seller for fixing/exchanging.

Could you measure lenght of battery the AW 14500 measures 51.33 mm and the Trustfire measures 51.70mm I don't think .37 mm could make that much difference. Are these your trustfires? I would like to know because I have some of these on order. :(

Size measurements :

P18650-22 - 18.30 x 67.60mm ( +/-0.05 )
P18500 ----- 18.45 x 51.33mm ( +/-0.05 )
P17670 ----- 17.02 x 67.30mm ( +/-0.05 )
P17500 ----- 17.00 x 51.33mm ( +/-0.05 )
P14500 ----- 14.33 x 51.33mm ( +/-0.05 )

... i trimmed both ends plastic wraps......

!EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!

Depending where you have trimmed and how much you cut off you could be very close to shorting +B directly to -B.

There is a thin flat wire running down the length of the cell. It connects +B to the protection circuit board. The only thing separating that wire from the battery tube is the outer heat shrink of the cell. If that flat wire should touch a conductive part inside the battery tube...:poof:

As far as I know all 14500 unprotected are 50mm long the difference is the protection each manufacture puts on the battery. If you take the protection off very carefully and put some electric shrink tube to cover it. You could use unprotected. Just be careful using it. :)

Mine were the ones with blue wrapping

Here is some interesting things I dug up on Trustfire. There are to different qualities between blue and the reds. Take a close look and compare quality, take special notice on vent holes on the button. The price is also different in China from the same dealer. Red cost a bit more. I also found this thread about both batteries, concerning output and size, the red 14500 is .5mm shorter then the blue. The blue measuring 51mm and red 51.5mm
Here is the thread

I have the reds on order I'll let you know if they fit on my JET-I and RRT-0 :)

I have the red trustfires in 123 size. The RRT won't close all the way with them.

Tonight I will acquire an AW 14500 and let you know how it fits in an RRT-0. I think the small amount is just enough to cause an issue, considering the threads have to be bottomed out to make contact.

EDIT: (I was able to close the RRT with the Trustfire, BUT it depended on how the switch spring compressed. Also it will be very late when I get the 14500. I will post as quick as possible.)

With all the many posts dealing with LiIon safety concerns, tinkering with a LiIon seems a mite too risky. The safer course would be to modify the light to accept the longer battery. Peak offers a shorter negative contact for those wishing to use longer 14500's in the new El Capitan. Others may do the same.

I not going to be able to come through today with the 14500 info. my buddy who is supplying me with the 14500 forgot it and I won't see him again until next week.

As in my edit above I got the trustfire to work if the switch spring compressed right. I will assume the AW will be the same. Hopefully someone else can let us know before next week.

I asked the supplier In China to do a physical measurement of Trustfire red & the Ultrafire grey 14500 protected (original from real company), the measurements where:

Trustfire red = 51.28mm

Utrafire grey = 51.50mm

AW as stated in sales link = 51.33mm

Based on this I can safely say if the AW fits so will Trusfire Red.

We also have selfbiult's review where he used an old Trustfire, And the thread where they state that the Trustfire red Measures 51.00 and is almost as good as the AW, I am really hoping that they do fit and perform well because of price option. :D
