I'd heard that Princeton Tec was going to modify the battery contact in the bottom of the Tec 40 with springs so it would work better with batteries that have a shorter negative end. I've been looking for the new lights for a while now and haven't seen them so I called Princeton Tec today to see when they will start shipping the Tec 40s with the new contacts. They told me that they had planned to modify the battery contact but have decided not to do it now. So unfortunately it looks like there will be no change. I was hoping to get one with the spring contact so I could use NIMH in the light. John

damn.
that would've been a great addition to the PT40 in my opinion..

in fact, after looking mine over just now, i can't stand the clank of the batteries landing in the bottom of the light!

i'm gonna call them and press the issue *lol*

Actually, I have a new PT40 that works great with NiMH - so it appears they have changed something.

No springs, though, but it does work with batteries that won't work in my friend's older PT40 or my older PT20.

Tried 2 different brands of NiMh. Generic greenies and GP2000. Neither will work in my old Tec20, but both work fine in my new Tec40 (purchased about 2 weeks ago).

Aloha, iG

I talked with them about 2 years ago on this problem. It doesn't appear to be battery length. Seems it is a problem with the flatness of the negative end. A battery that is too flat, with sharper edges, hits the curved edge of the inside bottom of the light before touching the contacts. They sent me some extra stick on metal straps and that fixed it. Now... there's little difference in this and what would happen if it was a length issue, but this better explains what's going on.
