Q about capacitor replacement?

Hi all,

I have this power supply for a flat panel LCD monitor FLASHLIGHT (It can light up a dark room.....) that has some bulging caps. 3 of them are 470uf 25V and one is a 220uf 25V cap. I see that Rat Shack has some 470uf 35V +- 20% and some 220uf 35V +- 20% caps. My question would be, can I safely use the 35V caps in place of the 25V caps? I think I can as long as I am replacing with higher voltage, but wanted to make sure there aren't any adverse side effects I might experience by doing this.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as they are both the same kind (aluminum electrolytic?) caps. The higher voltage ones will probably be larger, is all.
 
The 35 volt ones will probably last longer. The ones in there now probably failed from too much voltage. Make sure the new ones will physically fit.
 
If the old caps are physically bulging, then they got hot inside. That means high ESR, or at least higher than the circuit called for. It happens with modern high-frequency switching circuits.

I would go for capacitors specifically sold as "Low ESR", but if you cannot find them, then at lest go for the 105 degree caps rather than the 85 degree.

Thanks for the good info and pointers. Looking for some Low-ESR 105C caps now. Since it's to repair a backup Monitor, time is not that critical, so I can source online....
