What part of the reflector is responsible for smoothing out the rings of a P7 led without affecting throw so much? Was it the outer part of the reflector near the edge or the inner most part of the reflector near the led? I am thinking in partially frosting one to smooth out the beam but not loosing much throw.

Alex,

I think the innermost part is more responsible for producing artifacts, and the outer section is more responsible for throw, so you'd want to sputter near the LED. However, I've read that homebrew reflector sputtering solutions, while they may smooth out the beam, really bring down the efficiency.

You might possibly be interested in the 12.7mm bulb opening, camless version of FM's New Gen Hybrid reflector. Heavier OP in the center, progressively more SMO toward the outside. And, if you need to ream out the hole a bit, it won't be much.
