Anyone have any experience in making a picture slide show and putting it to music?

I have to make a presentation in a few weeks and I want to have a picture slide show playing. I thought a little music playing in the background would be a nice touch. I don't know what software would be best for this. I'm assuming powerpoint wouldn't allow the music and from what I've seen most new editing software runs upwards of $90.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I think you can do that with Window Movie maker, can't you? It comes with XP, I have used it to edit my avi files from my dig vid camera and put them back in one file to burn to a dvd. I know there is better software out there, but until I can't do what I want I will stick with the "free" one.

Powerpoint will allow you to insert a pre-recorded sound file or play a CD track during the presentation. Open up a blank presentation and look at the "Insert" menu for choices.

It's EASY to put Music in Powerpoint. How long is this show going to be? If it's short the easiest way will be a MP3, if it's longer burn a CD.

On the first slide. Click insert->Movies and Sound->Sound and find your file. Now comes the tricky part. A speaker will appear on your first slide. You need to set it to play automagically, but then you need to go find the advanced animation settings. You need to tell the sound file to play on the first slide+the next 1000 or 100 or a grossly large number.

(The default setting is that your sound plays on the slide you insert it on, and then stops as soon as you go to the next slide)

Thanks guys. This weekend I'll be putting it all together. It should run about 10 minutes, so I think I'll burn it onto a disk and play it from there.

Thanks,
Jason

Like Saaby said music in powerpoint is easy. I use Virtualdub for some basic video editing. It works great and you don't need a powerfull computer, best of all it's free! It makes it easy to insert music and edit a video around it.
