question concerning 3 and 5 Watt Luxeons (white)

Hi together here!
I am an avid reader for some time now, but noticed I have never posted any question.?
The last few days I tried numerous searches, and also have gone through quite some of the "lost" pages here (especially in the LED-section), but was not able to get suitable info.

What I like to know is:
when size is not the concern, would two 3 Watt Luxeons produce more light than a 5 watter?
Which configuration will need more current?

please tell me it would be the two 3watters, I already ordered some BBs and LEDs from Wayne /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
(even some reflectors, want to see the difference to fraens or NX05s.)

which would be the way to go for a powerful 2 AA-light? overdriven 1 Watt or a 3 Watt LED?

Welcome to CPF. You likely have already learned that there is great variation in performance from LED to LED so there is not absolute answer to your 2X3W vs 5W question. If you assume that you are dealing with LEDs that match the datasheet "typical" specs, then 2X3W will outperform the 5W option at all reasonable drive levels.
Regarding the 1W vs 3W, if using LEDs matching datasheet "typicals" the 3W will outperform the 1W.

In theory<font color="red">*</font>, 2x 3W Luxeons would be the same power dissipation and light production @ 700mA as a single 5W emitter.

<font color="red">*</font> - the realities of widely-varying flux binning make this highly unlikely to occur in reality.
