Questions about lanterns

After getting a bunch of incand and LED flashlights, I think this is the time for me to get some lanterns. As entry level, I would like to get some 6V lanterns. Here are my questions:

which lantern do you guys think as the best one?
for 6V lanterns, are there any big difference for using 4D and using 6V big lantern battery?
how is their output? for 4D ones, can I say it's more or less equivalent to Mag 4D? can they be compared to lithium incands like Surefire G2?
which kind of mod is the best for these lanterns? LED? xenon/halogan bulbs? or is HID possible?

I think Duracell uses 4 Ds in their 6 volt lantern battery while Eveready uses the little larger F cells. Eh, buy the one that's heavier.

Using a 3 cell bulb wil give you the best output, but you'll have the change the bulb every few hours.

Surefire G2 isn't as bright, but much smoother. They aren't really comparable, although total lumen output seems similar.

If HID (35 watt) is possible, I'll let you know. The problem is that the HID bulb is long and won't fit a 6 volt lantern reflector. Otherwise, that would be a great mod!

I like the Brinkmann Maxstar, seems to have a nice focus, that's adjustable (although you have to take the reflector off to do it).

My conclusions on the LED lanterns I've seen so far:
The Nuwai/Essential Gear/however it's branded 12-LED lantern driven by 4 D cells is a solid performer, decent value in the $40 or so range (I've seen it as high as $69). Lasts in the ballpark of 40 hours at brightest level, and brightness level is fully adjustable.

The Innovage 12-LED lantern, also driven by 4 D cells, appears to be the same internals with a different exterior. Other folks who have both say the internals appear to be identical. Overstock.com has them for $19.99, and RiteAid is intermittently offering them for $9.99 in the store - look for it in the "seasonal items" aisle. Few stores seem to actually stock them, and they're apparently not a regularly stocked item anywhere, but different store manager have told me this is the regular price when they're in stock. You may be able to get them to order you one or two at your local store. At this price, if you can get your hands on one, it's a screamin' deal.

The Energizer 2-LED Folding Lantern. Office Depot has them in their B&M stores, but they're not listed on their Web site. This is the only place I've found them. They're usually stocked behind the counter, on the bottom row below all the batteries (easy to overlook them in the display). Most Office Depot clerks have no idea they sell them, or any flashlights, for that matter. They're $3.29 in NYC stores, and at that price they're also a screamin' deal.
