Questions about Peak Matterhorn (replacing Fenix E01)

Howdy!

I'm looking into upgrading my EDC Fenix E01 to a Peak light (Matterhorn?), and have some questions regarding them. I have searched on here, and have found much information, but there are still some things I couldn't figure out completely.

1) From the posts I’ve read, I can’t figure out if the Matterhorn’s/Eiger’s are “battery-crushers” or if they use a spring. Is it different for the different body types?

2) Is the momentary switch option water-resistant?

3) I really like my Fenix E01, and want to stay as close to its design as possible, so I’m looking at the Matterhorn (which I think is the 5mm LED line). How is the tint on these compared to the Fenix? Whiter?

4) Is output an option on Matterhorn’s like on the Eiger? If so, what would the runtime be on one that has a 10lm output similar to the Fenix’s?

5) I saw some posts about a different Peak light that had to be unscrewed quite far to turn off. On the Matterhorn’s/Eiger’s how is the on/off action? Will it come apart in my pocket?
The ultimate purpose is to have another bomb-proof little pocket light with a decent output and long-runtime, just a little more “up-market” than the Fenix. Does the Matterhorn fill this role?

So, based on your answer to #4, the Matterhorn's also have selectable output levels. Any idea of the lumens/runtime for your suggestions? (I would check the site myself, but my employer blocks flash...)

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been looking at it as well.

I kinda like the simplicity of the 5mm led (no lens), but also like the idea of a floodier beam.

The runtime is pretty short (compared to the E01) and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I'd like to see real pictures and beamshots, including pictures of if it has a battery spring, or the new washer design with the stamped "fins" (like the 4sevens ReVo). Not sure about the longevity of the latter.

If you want to replace the baby Fenix,suggest you buy an Itp A3 for the time being and wait and see what is new for 2011.Led lighting will be big next year on the auto and domestic front and I cannot see any reason to doubt the lighting hobby will also benefit.

The A3 will serve you well as a small EDC,love mine like so many members do.

I have several Peak Matterhorns built using "snow" white LEDs. The tint is a slightly cool white on all except one of them which is on the warm side (yellowish green). I expect that you'll find your Fenix E01 has a much bluer tint than the Matterhorns.

The 3-LED stainless steel Matterhorn is my favorite backup light and I have carried it daily for a long time (see photo). It is simple, super rugged, and it edged out my Arc AAA-Ps except when worn on a neck lanyard. (The aluminum Arcs are lighter weight than the stainless steel Matterhorn.)

I also own an ITP A3 and use it indoors a few times each week, although I have more trust in the Matterhorn than the ITP for backup use. Lately, I've been contemplating the purchase of a Peak Eiger.

My wife has used 1-LED and 3-LED Matterhorns daily at her job for the past 3 years.

I won't answer what has already been said, but here is my perspective on the Matterhorn (which is the closest to E01, since it uses 5mm LED).
* the Ultrapower (UP) puts about ~8 lumens, and the HP slightly less in 1-LED configurations.
* 3-LED Matterhorns put out significantly more light than the 1-LED ones, but have tight hotspot with less sidespill
* There are numerous configuration options in the Matterhorn. The closest to Fenix would be the keychain carry, which can be easily disengaged from the keychain by simply unscrewing.
* The HAIII ano on the Matterhorn holds up much better than the Fenix.
* The light is water-proof, and there are claims of people changing batteries underwater, since the entire electronics is expoxied shut (difficult to mod though). And Matterhorns have seen several wash cycles without water leaking inside. Peak is modest and claims that these are water-resistant.
* I personally prefer the SS option, which is heavy, but holds up really well to abuse. Brass is slightly soft, but takes on a gold shine when polished with Brasso (and many Peak fans keep polishing their lights every week!).

I have several Matterhorns', and yes, they have held really well so far - my wife carries one in her purse, I gifted one to a friend on his wedding last year, and rides on his keychain, and I carry one on my keychain for a year now.

When you are ready to order, CALL up Peak if you are in the US, and everything will be nice and smooth (they are really good people to talk with). Good luck, and welcome to Peak - I am sure this won't be your last light. :wave:

The Eiger is an OUTSTANDING light!! I own about 7 of them, mostly #1 medium beams which are pretty close to the E01 in terms of brightness (about 5-7 lumens) I also have a #0 and subzero. All of mine are stainless and are a variety of body types, but the keyring (not lug) is my favorite style.

I also own many Matterhorns and have to say the Eiger does it much better, but I would not go out of my way to replace a Matty with an Eiger.

As said above: I personally feel stainless is the way to go.

There are other AAA options out there, but Peak is in a league of its own... Did you know they are still hand made?

Parnass and choombak, do the 3 LED versions of the Matterhorn have reduced runtime over the 1 LED version? If so, approximately how much?

I'm liking the idea of the 3 LED version more and more.

The 3-LED version consumes more current than the 1-LED version so it has a shorter runtime. Sorry, I haven't measured the runtimes. I use Energizer E2 lithium primary batteries in the Matterhorns which last longer and I've only had to replace them once or twice over the past few years.

Thats kinda what I figured. Decisions, decisions...:whistle:

I definitely need to get one to try. Off the the MP to see what I can find.
