hello everybody. im trying to figure out what type of leds are in the valentine v1 radar detector front display in the picture below. what i want to do is shown exactly in the picture below. i want to change the colors from plain red to different colors so i can identify what band led is on at night. so far the only information i got is that they are 3.0mmx1.5mm SMD CHIP LED LAMP and i tested the voltage and it reads 1.6 volts. hopefully someone can tell me exactly what kind i need to get and where? I need the colors blue, green, and yellow. thank you.

They are SMD LEDs, I'm not sure what the ones you have are specifically called though. Maybe a search of "SMD LED" would help?

A potential problem is that the different colors can require different voltages (red is around 1.6-1.7v while blue is around 3.3-3.5v).

P.S. your pictures are too big, the rules state no larger then 800x600.

sorry about that i re sized it. so if i were to put blue i would have to change the voltage?
 
I'm not sure. My guess is yes, you'll need to somehow change the voltages for the LED with different Vfs (forward voltage, voltage to LED) but I can't be certain.
 
Don't speed, no need for a radar detector. You won't be able to replace the LED's reds have a low Vf about half of any other color, if they were white, blue, green you could run the other colors or red with resistors, but red can't be converted.

I think this is a great idea. I hate not being able to tell which one is Ka or K at night.
 
Well I suppose he could just ask the guy on the speeding forum what LED's he used, I mean the guy is actually doing this mod for a few bucks.
 
That is the one and only thing I dislike about my v1. I had envisioned a mod EXACTLY like your second picture from day 1 (down to the color and number of each color LED). If you're going to go through the trouble of changing the band indicators, might as well change the signal strength meter too. That is how they SHOULD come from the factory (Mike V, are you listening?).

Unfortunately, I don't want to kill my warranty/upgrade coverage, which you would have to do in order to do this (I've read that though their stated warranty is 1 year, they'll really cover you for a LOT longer than that).

Do you have a link to where you found that picture?
