Tried searching, but just can't find.

Is this safe? I have some tenergy Li-ion that recharge to around 3.7 - 3.8 volts.

I don't want to fry my favorite flashlight, just want to play with it without all the guilt.

You wouldn't do any harm to the lamp assembly, the A2 is regulated and it will always supply the same voltage.
However, the LED's are direct drive and will be over-driven with these rechargeables. Some people run it and it seems it can work without any noticeable damage. Some LED color's are more resistant to higher voltage.
One solution is (or was?) Bawko's Aviatrix LED ring, which supports rechargeables. Or you could try to find some 3.0V that will fit (those new, with the special chemistry... can't recall the name right now).
Anyway - you will get about 60% of the runtime on rechargeables.

Look at my sig, there is an index of A2 threads, and some discuss the rechargeable options.
