Hey guys,

My Mom is about 70 years old but she loves gadgets. A while back I gave my mother one of those $7 Elly flashlights, which I had modded to put a Cree star into.

She loved the light dearly, and carried it around in her purse all the time. However, the main thing she used it for was reading. She reads in bed about every night. She has a hard time seeing and so she would use the flashlight to read with.

The problem was, she always fell asleep reading, and the battery would go dead. This wasn't a big deal by itself, except that SOMETIMES, when the battery goes dead, it leaks gunk out.

This happened a couple times, but finally one time the gunk the battery leaked out ruined the flashlight's driver circuitry.

Does anyone have any good ideas as to how to set her up with a flashlight that she can use to read, but if she falls asleep and leaves it on, it won't ruin the battery or make it leak?

The light would preferrably use AA batteries, for simplicity sake. She always has lots of those. Also, it would need to have a good balance of runtime (so she can read for a couple of hours or so) and brightness (she also uses it to feed the dogs at night, go on walks at night, etc).

I also want to go a step up in quality this time vs. the Elly, which seemed kind of cheapo on the reflector and lens.

Your ideas?

Get her some eneloops and a smart charger - they don't leak and they have low self discharge so they keep their charge like an alkaline battery.

For a budget reading light I would recommend the Romisen RC-29 Q5 as reviewed here: http://www.jayki.com/5626

because the flood mode is good for close-up tasks where a hotspot is annoying and not needed.

edit: actually maybe you need something with a longer runtime, or a low mode

Try Peak flashlights. Durable and the circuitry is sealed in to prevent such corrosion. I would spare her the trouble of charging.... she might fall asleep doing that too.

For reading in bed, wouldn't one of those proper book lights be better, the ones that clip onto the book? I have quite a nice one somewhere but I can't find it. It has a nice smooth beam. The only drawback with mine is it takes coin cells. Alternately a headlamp would do the job.
