Ok i need help and probably some i should see a doctor about but anyways. I have a Quark 123^2 turbo X. What battery should i run? Is a 17670 and two cr123's the same size are they interchangable? Whats the diffence between protected and unprotected? If i go rechargable do i need a smart charger?

It sounds like you should use the recommended power of two CR123A cells to start with while you spend more time learning about the care and use of lithium ion cells. Once you learn more about safe handling of lithium ion cells you could then think about going rechargeable. Bear in mind that a 17670 is not a consumer battery and is not something you can simply buy, use and charge like a regular rechargeable AA cell. Lithium ion cells have some dangers associated with them that can lead to fire, property damage and even injury if used or charged improperly.
 
i have li-io cells in my rc vehicles, cars, trucks, helicopter etc. i mean im no expert but i have a pretty good understanding of what not to do. i have a special bag i put the battery in so if the $h1t hits the fan were still good.
 
Well, OK, some things to think about:

  1. The light is not advertised to take rechargeable batteries. So you should expect best performance using disposable CR123A batteries;
  2. If you do use rechargeable batteries, the specifications say the input voltage can be from 3.0 to 9.0 V, so the voltage of lithium ions will be compatible;
  3. You may not get full brightness on the lower voltage of a single lithium ion cell--I don't know for sure, I have not tested it;
  4. A 17670 may physically be too large to fit in the light--again I don't know;
  5. The low voltage cut-off for the light may be unsuitable for lithium ion cells--this could cause damage to the cell;
  6. Protected cells contain circuits to protect against over voltage and under voltage (and sometimes over current)--however, it is unwise to rely on this protection since it is a last chance safety feature;
  7. Protected cells are longer and fatter than unprotected cells--this may be a factor in whether a given cell fits in the light;
  8. Lithium ion cells can be charged with a standard RC charger, as long as the charger has a single cell setting.

OK, that's all I can think of for now. Your best bet is to search the forum to see if anyone has tried the combination of this light and a lithium ion battery. You are probably not the first to ask this question.

By the way, if you edit the thread title to contain the keywords Quark 123^2 and lithium ion you might get more responses. Your current thread title has a "pass over" feel to it ;)
