Is there such a thing as a good dynamo light, thats worth buying?

I think they are clever, but all the ones I've seen are pretty junky.

regards,

My short answer is probably not. But, perhaps someone else has found one?

I guess the closest thing that I have ever seen was a flashlight that I purchased at a "big box" store here in Japan. It was not very bright, but it was a decent functional flashlight. And, it had a "large" (about 1.5" x 4.0"?) solar panel. But, in addition, it also had a "dynamo" that worked on a "pull string." (Like the pull rope on a lawn mower.) It seemed like a reasonably practical light, and I purchased several. But, I think I have given them all away, so I cannot post any pictures. The reason I felt that this light was "reasonably practical" was that the "pull string" mechanism would allow you to easily generate some serous RPM. (Regular hand cranking gets old in a hurry.) Even so, I think it took several minutes of vigorous "pulling" to generate a full charge. And, while quite strong, the nylon string would likely break in time, if you used it very often. So, it was strictly a "survival" light, I think.

cheers Rosoku. that is a pity. theb lack of mantenance (batteries) is quite an attractive trait.

can i also say goodbye to that horrible overbearing yellow banner, that people (scum?) with under three post counts have to endure.

i wont miss you.

I just happened to come across a product that was new to me: K-TOR Human Powered Generators

"K-TOR designs and manufactures human powered portable energy generators that serve as portable outlets to provide electrical power on the go. Our power generators are driven by human bio-mechanical energy. They provide reliable, self-sustainable power to individuals anywhere, anytime."

These K-TOR products may be better than some, perhaps even most. But, as you view to their how-to and promotional videos, you will quickly come to realize the limitations of a human powered "human powered" dynamo. These things require a lot of hard work.

Someone someday may still come up with a "better mouse trap" but so far, I think you are looking at many many minutes (perhaps hours?) of vigorous cranking to generate enough electricity to be useful.

Looks ground breaking.

Not really, that I've found. I have a couple of them, and while they work fine, the light they put out is pitiful. Better than nothing, for sure, but IMO you'd be better off with a decent flashlight that runs off AA's.

I've also got a radio/lantern that can be powered by either a dynamo or solar cells. Basically, you'd be nuts to power this thing via the dynamo; it's just way too much effort. A full charge would take 3 hours cranking. The solar option is far more efficient, and works quite well.

So, I think a dynamo is a pretty inefficient way to power anything.

I have an old Chinese military hand pedaled radio energizer; incorporated a tiny bench in the design that folded to be lugged on the back. (May have been from cheaper than dirt) I figured out how to attach a cable supplied and do some measurements. Really feeble output. Heavy Duty but crazy for this day and age.

What about those wind up plastic one-hand crank, little units that power a radio and a dim LED?

Checkout the Sherpa LED Torch.

Good work Norm! I have never seen such a thing before. Bit pricey, but might be worth it, if the technolog is truly done correctly. (I must admit, I am "interested," though not likely to invest in one anytime soon.)

Anyone have one? Says it uses a "built-in" NiMH battery. It would be nice if that cell could be replaced with an Eneloop. LSD technology seems important for an emergency product like this.
