rechargable CR123A

a friend of mine who is a camera junky says he has a charger a rechargable CR123A's for his cameras.

is there such a beast or is he just blowing smoke?

I do believe that there is a 123 sized rechargeable, but it doesn't have nearly the capacity of the 123 and I think it's NimH.

I have an IQ-9000 charger that claims to be able to recharge 123 batteries. I think the claims were false...

Great charger for NimH batteries though.

That's why I haven't tried it yet.

I couldn't find a lot of feedback on the IQ-9000 charger, so I didn't bother. Besides, 123's are a lot easier to source nowadays.

There are rechargable 123 batteries. But they only have about 400mA capacity, and they are less than 3 volts (2.4-2.6v).

They are made from 2 x 1/5-A sized NiMh batteries stacked. Considering that normal 3V 123 batteries have something like 1300mA capacity, the rechargables have less than 1/3rd the capacity. Pretty weak.

Putting the capacity issue aside, would it be possible that, under heavy loads (such as from an incandescent light source), 2.4-2.6V may not be that far off from what you would get from a Lithium 123? NiMH and NiCd cells have a lower internal resistance than even Lithiums, correct?

aren't 123's bigger in diameter than AA's? What about sub C's, aren't those pretty close in size but not 3v?

jaxup, i got 2.4v from an 123 under an amp load or so, after a minute or so.

I asked the seller and he said they are Li-Ion (not Ni-Mh !) rechargeable CR123A batteries with 3,6 V and 650 mAh. They are supposed to work just as good as real CR123A in cameras (90-100 pictures with flash) but he has not tried them yet in flashlights. He also said, that they sell really well and there haven't been any complaints from his customers yet.

Assuming these have a decent capacity, I'd get a set of these too.

Well, probably they are not good for incans, but could work good with regulated luxeons.
When I get my hands on the parts I ordered from the sandwich shop, and if I manage to assemble them into my walther xenon tactical light, (which is pretty useless in its stock version) I will probably order two of them and this charger to test the whole thing. Anyway, as this is going to be my first mod and I have to do some of the work outside my house (it's pretty cold here right now), this may not be the case until late February. So, if anyone gets them before I'm finished I would be happy to read a review. Some of our more advanced german flashaholics should have lights to use them in and they aren't to expensive to just try them.

Chrisse, i am trying to secure a sample for testing from a fellow European CPF'er. Ill be happy to report results when/if i get my hands on them. Please note, they are only advertised as being compatible with cameras, and nothing else.
