I have a notebook and it has about 1.5 hours runtime.

Is it possible to use a big external rechargable battery like a SLA or NiMh, etc(more than 2600mAh since that's what the laptop batt is).

The battery pack is rated as 10.8V and 2600mAh. The label on the power adapter says output is 16V and 3.36A, there's also a funny symbol between the 16V and 3.36A that looks like a horizontal line and a dashed line under it?

Also does anyone know which ones are the power pins for the USB port, I'm consider making a USB led light to shine on the keyboard. No doubt someone has already done that.

Thanks in advance!!

P.S. I mean I could just go and get
this but I'd personally rather spend the money on some torches.... err I mean flashlights... you know what I mean.

Hi, yclo,

Although it's put in respect to computer stuffs, I think that you are "On Topic" with this one.
(It's still TORCH!-related.)

If I move it over to the "Batteries Included" forum, those clever chaps will know what all this "horizontal line/dashed line" stuff means.

USB powered LED lights sounds interesting too ......

Re: your link in the "P.S." those items bring a new meaning to "flat batteries"

Could be a lot of *potential* there

The symbol you describe means the output is DC rather than AC (which would use a sinusoidal curve to denote that style of current.)

The AC adaptor also probably has a higher voltage and amperage output than the battery, in order to be able to charge the battery.

I was able to find this USB pinout w/ pictures. Hope it helps, good luck, chocks away, etc etc etc...

EDIT:
I also found a site with a whole HORDE of pinouts for many devices. Nifty!

Just be careful that it may Spam you by asking if you want to install some sort of spyware (w/ a box like the Comet Cursor or the Language Support installaton routine)

Good luck on your keyboard light. I've seen a LED light for the gameboy at walmart. I don't know if these use the same kind of connection?

Yes. What a coincidence. I just bought a 2Ah SLA to use as an external battery for my Toshiba Libretto. It cost about AU$12. It will give about 5+ hours runtime. Internal battery is only giving about 45 minuts now.

10.8V? AFAIK, the closest SLA battery you will find is 12V. You could drop the voltage by using a few 0.7V diodes (1N4001).

This site explains how to do it on the Libretto. I dont know if yours will work the same, but it will give you the idea I think. Yours may even be simpler.

This site has great tips on a lot of computer related things.

Have fun!

I actually have such a light .-) It contains 3 white LEDs and does a good job for typing in a train or somewhere else.

Which Incandescent torch is the brightest and the smallest for pocket carrying?

You can't go wrong with a Stremlight Stinger for blistering bright light.

PS- Remember, if you have to strike a match to see if it's light, then it's no good!

An Arc AAA with a NiMH cell in it.

A fully charged 10.8V Li Ion battery will easily have more than 12V, so there is no need to drop the voltage.
