Hello folks,
A friend of mine is looking for advice on a rechargeable light. He's a knife dealer, and his distributor also carries Maglite, Streamlight, and Surefire, so those are the three brands to choose from (no Tigerlight, bummer). His use will be both utility and tactical use, but I don't know at this time what his priorities are as far as tactical versus utility (e.g., is tailcap switch a must? Is runtime more important than brightness? How big is he willing to go? Is Surefire-style out-of-light recharging okay?). I don't think my buddy knows himself yet how he'll prioritize things. So, I'm looking for a little help from you guys, most importantly on quality, but any other comments you have to make.
Here are the lights I'll look at with him:
- Magcharger (though I really don't want t support Mag)
- Surefire 8 or 9 series light
- Streamlight 20 or any of the stingers
Most importantly, have we heard any quality problems on any of the above? I have some hazy memories of problems with the Surefire rechargeables.
Beyond that, the Surefire 9 seems like a great option if quality is high and he's willing to spend that much. 20 or 140 lumens on one tactical switch, overall package no bigger than a Tigerlight FBOP. If he wants to keep the light around FBOP-sized lights, the Streamlight Stingers (except the Ultrastinger) all seem to fall in around that size also, and I think they're all well-reviewed.
So, in summary, any comments about quality here would be appreciated. Also, any particularly bad or splotchy beams, or beams not suitable for tactical use, would be appreciated.
