Recommend a Worklight

I need a recommendation for a home worklight. Essentially, I need to light up an area when I do home improvement projects (i.e. crawl in the attic, replace faucet, working in the garage, working on something outside in the dark, etc.). I would like one with a magnetic attachment and it would be nice if it is rechargeable. It would be nice if it could stand on its own, but that's not a requirement.

The only light I could find that matches my requirements is the Bayco SLR-2166. Are there any other worklights I should consider?

The Xtar Meteor is nice for that stuff, its water rated 8' submersible (IPX8 rated), built like a tank, has 3 brightness levels, the highest at 500 lumens. The beam is nice and floody, so you don't have to aim it really...and it tailstands...and with 500 lumens on tap, all from one strong LED, when tailstanded, it lights up an entire room.

(That Bayco only has a HIGH of ~ 120 lumens)

The Bayco needs to be plugged back in to recharge if it goes dim...the Xtar takes rechargable 123's, so you can simply pop in a fresh set, and recharge the one you took out....no waiting.

The Xtar is teeny and compact, and easy to bring with you, so no hanging up in a tight crawlspace, etc...the Bayco is a large work light with 66 weak LEDs.


It has a magnetic base plus a chain with a lobster claw...so its really handy to stick/hang where ever you need it. It takes a single (Rechargeable s) RCR123 or IMR123, or even (Primary) CR123 cell.

I leave mine clipped to a belt loop, and its proved to be AMAZINGLY handy.


I got mine at MD-Lightsource, as they give CPF people a discount....less than $30 total....incl delivery.

Thanks TEEJ. I was looking more for something similar to the Bayco SLR-2166 (handheld cordless rechargeable work light strip) rather than a flashlight like the xtar meteor. However, I will keep the xtar meteor in mind for a future purchase.

I know, I used to use a light like the Bayco until I realized the meteor worked better. Allowing a different form factor is all that was needed for me to make the transition.

You could put a diffuser cone on most flashlights and have something very functionally similar to a worklight, then you'll have a much wider choice of outputs/size/battery type/etc, along with the added benefit of having a real flashlight when that would be more useful. Just a suggestion.
