Right now I have an old, old Benchmade AFCK.

Here's what I like about it:
-- very good grip. I like the G10 scales a lot better than any texturized metal.
-- good blade shape/design. Seems optimal for cutting and stabbing through stuff. Also the blade is sharpened on both sides, my friend has an Emerson that's only sharp on one side that sucks imo.
-- serrations... very useful at times
-- fairly easy to open with one hand
-- great pocket clip
-- good weight/size overall

What I don't like about it:
-- the thumb hole doesn't seem quite as good as a stud for allowing you to transfer force in opening the blade
-- it's hard to get it the right amount of looseness to flick open easily and have it stay that way, usually it gets tighter as time goes on

So... can anyone recommend me a knife similar to the AFCK, with perhaps assisted opening or a thumb stud?

You wouldn't be sorry with this!
G10 and blade shape/length seems just right!

I also like the s30v Spydie native tho frn handle.

The benchamde 805 TSEK is very similar to the AFCK, but has thumbstuds
 
I looked at the military, but didn't like the lack of serrations and thumb-hole opener. The 805 TSEK looked pretty good, but in the end I went with a Kershaw Avalanche, which is sort of like a mini-AFCK ripoff with assisted opening.

I'm actually digging the assisted opening, but just wish the knife had an Axis lock and opening disc or more handle cut away by the stud, because it's sorta hard to hit sometimes.

Overall, I think it's better than the mini-AFCK I had, but the liner lock is extremely stiff, the opener isn't as good as it could've been, and maybe this is nitpicking, but I like the AFCK's blade and handle design slightly better.

Oh well, seems ok so far. Thanks for the recommendations.

Another vote for the SOCOM, I EDC one, and love it.

Also, I like the Benchmade 940's

I can most definitely make a recommendation within the Benchmade family. BM 710 partially serrated (or plain edge). The M2 steel is my favorite, but the 154CM is great too.

Sebenza is crazy overpriced /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I can see paying $100 for a knife that cost $10 in parts to make, but $350????

I'm pretty happy with the Avalanche still. I think serrations, assisted opening, and G10 scales will be "requirements" for knives I get in the future.

I played with some of my roommate's knives. Don't like metal handles at all. They can be too hot/cold and are a lot more slippery than G10.

I really like the AXIS liner lock, and am still partial to the handle/blade of the AFCK. Still, Benchmade doesn't make any assisted openers, and Montana still has the retarded switchblade laws on the books, so not much I can do.
 
Hmmm... I can't say I like that Benchmade in particular... but good they're including the assisted opening mechanism.

Going to have to write my state legislators and try to get rid of this damn auto knife ban.
 
I'm not too crazy about assisted-opening knives. They have a cool gadget factor, but imagining it coming open in my pocket is pretty scary. Also, the difference between that and a switchblade is a tiny, obscure technicality that I would not want to have to explain in court. I can open a standard thumb-stud knife just as quickly and conveniently, also with more control, so I don't see the advantage of assissted-opening. I would lean toward the 710 or TSEK.
 
I'm not too worried about the pocket thing. Assisted opening isn't huge, but IMO, it's a nice little feature you miss when you go back to a manual knife. Assisted openers are legal under Montana state law, the cops know what they are, and I have a CCW so I'm not too worried about it legally.

Is assisted opening any faster than flicking a manual? No, not really. But it's a little more convienient imo.

Maybe I'll get bored of it eventually tho /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Benchmade 710 all the way /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif This knife has been my EDC for a long time. 5 or 6 years.

Wow, ErickThakrar, you've done a ton of modifications to your 710. Can you list all of them, and note their effectiveness vs stock?
