RED led light

My son wants a LED light with red beam for bushwalking/camping (red light preserves night vision). I could not find a cheap and decent one that uses AA or AAA. Can someone recommend something? I know of the Safe-light but that's too expensive and does not use AA/AAA. DX SKU 20333 uses 18650 too.

That's a very good idea. Will DX SKU 26345 fits into solarforces L2r in terms of size and voltage?

voltage: You should get a L2i. The dropin is 3-18V, so with the 2x1.5V of the l2r you are at the minimum voltage even with fresh batteries.

You can buy slip on red lens covers that would convert any light into a red,most commonly used by Air Rifle users for telescopic sights.I bought a pair for my rifle,they are flip cover as well.You measure the od and order the size you want,they are push on friction fit,avoid the brand leaders as these are 10 times the price of the budget clones.Any decent air arms dealer should have plenty to choose from or go to the favorite auction house which is where i got mine.

I put a red filter on my MC-E light, and is it ok to have a hella-bright light with a red filter? I don't want to screw up my eyes.

Curiously, I discovered that glow-in-the-dark stuff does not get "recharged" when you are using the red filter :)

Wouldn't a normal (white ) LED light with a rally low LO (ie "moonlight" ) be OK ? I find my night vision isn't affected at all as long as the lumens output is low enough (and you don't have the issue of all the colours being "off" as well). That gives you a lot more options, and you can run it on higher levels as well, so more versatile.

The general consensus is that a very low output white light is the best bet in these situations. As Greg pointed out, the red makes colors look wrong, and a sufficiently bright red light will be just as destructive to night vision as any other color. I think Greg's perspective is dead on: find a light with a very, very low low mode, and your son will have a great light that does everything.

that black cat red led looks like a beauty , I use a red filter on LL p14 & P17 when hunting ...I find the red filter seems to mess with my perception of depths distance size ect ...my hunting buddy also agree's that the red light mess's with his perception ..its something to think about if your young bloke is walkin round in the bush he may be better off with a white light as suggested

I've read that Red light actually discharges GiD powder.

I've had a little luck with painting green GiD powder on the side ports of a bike light as well as the bezel of a flashlight. If you don't want to project the light too far, and you're going to use a white light, you could try painting the reflector or the lens or the inside of the red filter with red or green GiD powder. I'm not sure if the green glow would be able to push much, if any red light out the filter though (no red filters to try). The best red powder isn't rated much past 2 hours of light though, and the price has just gone up too...could be an interesting, but expensive experiment.

Thanks for all the comment. I ended up getting him the Hugsby 4+7 11-LED Tri-Color light on DX SKU 4514. While he's pretty happy with it, the new request is an angled light so it can be clipped onto clothes or belt while walking (cadet training) and still must be or have a RED LED (army requirement).

So the search goes on and I found something like this on eBay http://www.ex-military.org/web-tex-led-angle-torch--flashlight-676-p.asp but I guess there must be something better suggested by the collective wisdom here.
