I have recently finished building my dive light, and am just reworking the internals to make them more durable. When trying to work out a better way to do reed switch mounting that didn't take a lot of time, I came up with a great idea, at least, in my opinion :naughty:
Previously, I was attaching the reed switch to the wire and then encasing the whole thing in heat shrink to keep it all together. This was ok, but it wasn't very durable as heat shrink isn't exactly armor. After much mulling, here's what I decided to do:
Attach the reed switch to the wire as normal:
After soldering wires to the reed switches, I place the assembly into a tube of clear heat shrink. I shrink a small section at the wires to hold it in place. This does not seal airtight, as the gap between the wires usually has a small opening. I then use a syringe to inject pre-mixed 5 minute epoxy into the tube from the other end. When the epoxy cures the reed switch is, for all intents and purposes indestructible:
I hope someone finds this idea useful, I know it's allowed me to mount my reed switches without worrying about breaking them.
