regulated and unregulated

Hi, I am new to the forums :wave:and i am wondering if the more elightened of you can give me a run down on the difference between a regulated and un regulated torch/headlamp, although further to this I am wondering how this regulation is achieved in practice.

Sorry if this is a repeated/stupid question, I have looked around the forums and cannot find the answer to the second part of my question.
