I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I'm not familiar with exactly how a "sandwich" is constructed. I have a Lux III that has no leads. What's left of them seems to reach perfectly to the two sets of "posts" on top of the BB. Can I solder the LS directly to these "posts" provided that the correct polarity is observed? Will this work? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

The macro on my camera sucks, but here's a couple of pics that (I hope) will give you an idea of what I'm thinkig about doing.

Peter,

What you describe will work fine. I recommend thermal-epoxying the LS to the emitter board prior to soldering. Double check polarity. If you open-circuit the module's output under power, it will kill the module. BTW, the "tabs" adjacient to the actual LS leads are electrically common with them and can also be used for connection.

I also presume it is a white emitter. Some of the coloreds can have a slug polarity issue and must be electrically isolated from (-). Most of the time the epoxy does the job with the coloreds- ya just gotta be a litttle careful how thin you squeeze the epoxy layer. With a white, you want it as thin as possible, so press it down.

Hmmmm... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif my apologies for a dumb question, but how do you determine which is the positive lead for both the sandwich and the emitter?

I know, I know... I'm tryin' to learn here...

See the wiring diagram on Wayne's site. In the Peter's pics, you can identify pins on the left side as LED- (or GND or LED cathode or negative).

Also, the top plane of the emitter board is GND and you can see which pin is connected to GND.

Regarding the emitter, I would suggest reading the Lumileds datasheet since future LS packages may change, but for now, this drawing may help.
