rip off?

i just purchased an UltraFire WF-501B on line for around $11.00 and when i turned it on i was dissappointed with the light. It was yellowish and not very bright for one advertised as 900 cp. i got an e-mail from amazon today with the same light advertised as an led with a cree emmitter (?) and looking closely at the picture it has a flat yellowish "bulb" where the one i have has a clear bulb that sticks up about 1/8". did i get what i paid for? as you can tell i know little about lights and have just become aware of this board. thanks in advance for any information.

There are better constructed and higher quality items available through the cpfmp forums

It sounds like you have an incandescent. What does the battery look like? I suspect you have an only-partly-charged lithium-ion battery in the flashlight. Only charge it with a proper charger. If you aren't sure what such a charger is, ask us.

Are there labels on the battery? What do they say?

BTW - cp are not the same as lumens.....a 5 MILLION CP HID Spot Light might only produce 600 or so lumens for example.

So, 900 CP is not that bright to start with.

If you have a "bulb" and not a flat "LED", you probably have an incandescent flashlight with typically weak output, possibly exactly as advertised...or, a bait and switch, etc.

I did a Google search on this light, of which there are several versions. They range from an XRE-7090 all the way up to an XM-L T6 with 510 lumens! Sounds like the OP might've bought from an independent seller who was selling an older version.

BUYER BEWARE when it comes to "FIRE" flashlights :scowl:.

Consider it a cheap price for a host. Time to mod. Read CPF and see what other people have done with similar lights.

Do yourself a favor a save your money and later get a bored Surefire 6P to accept 18650 lithium ion batteries get a Nailbender XML drop in and call it a day. If you are on a budget get a Solarforce L2T instead of the Surefire. Buy AW 18650 3100 mAh batteries and about the only thing Ultrafire makes which has been good to me is the WF-139 charger. Use the search feature, read up on the dangers of using lithium ion batteries and welcome to CPF.

1/8" thick bulb does sound like an LED, but a picture would help. You got what you paid for and that lead you here, the living holy grail of flashlight information galore. Do some research, get one ot two decent lights and don't come back or you risk sinking your whole life into flashlights. Don't worry about the 11$ light, it will be perfect for leaving in the car once you get something better.

I bought a 501 B. I did not expect Surefire quality, and I did not get it. However, I am pleased and find it useable.
