R.I.P. Paul Rubens.
The man who brought the character of Pee-Wee Herman to life on TV and the Big Screen.

In a handbasket
I looked up a few old video interviews of him when he was finally allowed to appear on talk shows as himself. He seemed like a pretty normal, nice guy when he was out of character. I also learned that he visited a number of terminally ill children as Pee-Wee, and he said that those visits took a lot out of him, yet he still did them.

When his Pee-Wee character was at it's peak, his manager wouldn't allow him to be seen or interviewed out of character as he wanted Pee-Wee to be a real life person, not just a character on TV. That's why he appeared on the Dating Game in character.

He's made some mistakes in his life but overall he seems to have been a good person. RIP sir and thanks for the smiles. :au:

Personally I always thought Reubens act was creepy. And, the guy not too bright to think tabloids wouldn't follow him into a X-rated theater..
Thankfully my kids were grown past that stage to follow his tv show in 90's.
Wasn't the tabloids that followed him in there.... Local cops that had nothing better to do apparently than stakeout the Adult theater. Your tax-payer dollars at work. Caught him doing what every guy does in one of those theaters if we're being completely honest. Poor judgment on his part, for sure. But he definitely paid a heavy price for that one incident, with his career being destroyed because of it.

Thought I read the tabloids ratted him out to cops..

Either way, given Reubens notoriety, he should have known better.

Once into one of those theaters was enough for me. Not that I grew up a choir boy, but mother of God, what the f**k am i sitting in!

As kids, thought we were entertaining a couple young gals. They were turned off from it all, especially the creep sitting in rear playing pocket pool and making grunts lol

Yup, should have known better. When that particular police force busted him, his agent offered to do a community service promotion of their department. A special episode on the show. In exchange, he'd quietly plead guilty and pay a huge fine. Basically what every such offender would have gotten. But their police chief decided that contacting the media was best.

I was not allowed to watch this as a kid, along with 50% of everything else on the tv.... Back then I never understood what the big deal was about him going to a theatre. This thread fills in the blanks.

This one hit hard. I was on Mr. Rueben's protective detail when he brought the Playhouse to Seattle. He was one of the nicest and hardest working celebrities I'd had the chance to work with. He always made sure the team was taken care of and was always moving. And he was truly funny. He will be missed😢
