I bought this light at my local Target this morning. I got home and turned it on....played with the focus....and decided immediately that I hated it. I put it back in it's package, and returned it. Focused out is like a big black hole with a light ring around it....:sick2:
Actually, the flood on the 2AA NightFire w/ focus control I got looks nothing like what is described above, the described sounds more like a MAG flood.
In a MagLED flood, the center hole is the darkest, the second ring is the brightest, and the outer ring is the "spill" so second brightest.
In my NightFire flood, the center area is pretty big, and is the same brightness as the flood, WAAY smoother than the Mag. The secondary ring is not really a ring but a cerrated thin ring, so the flood is pretty uniform.
If they would make a version with either a Rebel 100 or a Cree Q5, drive it to 200+ lumens, make the focal point for the flood closer for a wider flood, and the throw point a little farther for an even more piercing beam, they would have a real winner. I really like the design, the momentary switch is nice, and I like the tailstandability (though in truth this detracts from the "tactical" switch label, wherein the switch end should protrude a little). This little critter is pretty tough, too, survived around a 4.5 foot drop w/ diagonal (around 80 deg.) trajectory onto concrete, bezel first. the outer lip was only slightly roughed up, no bending of the rim like on my Gerber Infinity Ultra, which suffered a similar drop.
All in all not a bad light, I don't think I feel like buying the 2AA LedLenser for 70+ bucks anymore, though it may be a little brighter with that Cree...
If River Rock or FavourLight would come up with the modified lens system I described along with the emitter upgrades and amperage increase, I wouldn't mind AT ALL paying 40 - 50 bucks for whatever battery types, a nice 250 lumen 2xcr123 would be sick.
