Riyobi Tek4

Hello, new recruit here. On July 8th we had a major flood/power outage here in Toronto Canada. I am at ground zero for this one - we had about 60" of water in the basement. Water rose at 1" per minute, for an hour then it started dropping at about 6" per hour (took about 12 hours to drain it away)

Power was out for 30hours. Anyway no one injured, and our basement wasn't finished anyway. Lost washer/dryer some tools, lots of baby clothes and other misc junk.

Why do you care? Prior to this my wife nagged me for buying 'too many flashlights'. I assume this is common in these forums...oddly I haven't heard any mention of that issue since that week when we used all my lights and were actually a bit short on lighting power! I have an opportunity to replace some lights that were lost or underperformed :).

I want to upgrade to the 3.7/4v stuff. I noticed the limitations on AA/AAA powered devices. a 10 LED 3xaaa will either not throw much light or die quickly...

It will be an easier sell to the wife if I go with brand names and not some weird stuff from hong kong. So to that effect I noticed this Ryobi Tek4 line of 4v tools.

They appear to use the 4v (and now after all my forum reading I have forgotten the type CR123... something or other, the common ones ac CPF) batteries. Oddly the spec for the flashlight says 65 Lumens. Which is, like , a candle. There are also some nice attachments for the Tek4 system.<P> Any one have any experience with this line up?

I did receive the smaller flashlight for a gift a couple years ago. The light isn't too expensive but adding the battery and charger made it pricey. But no cost to me. I like the light and have no problems. I wanted the newer brighter one but it is $50, and that is almost what I paid for my nitecore ec25, which has 850 lumens compared to 200 lumens for the brighter ryobi. But they seem well made.

Thanks for the feedback Rix. I turns out while there is some neat stuff on the HD.com site, HD in Canada doesn't carry much and Ryobi is HD exclusive in north America. I would be limited in what the system could do, so I couldn't spread the steep upfront cost across multiple tools. I'll wait for a sale.

I've got the little 60 lumen "high intensity" ryobi light. It's okay. Probably around 3 hours runtime and throws a spot beam with little spill. It's not very water resistant but is otherwise a sturdy light. The bigger light which is 200+ lumens has a very bright hotspot and decent spill.

I have them both, but wouldn't buy again. They're just.....okay. There are a lot better lights for the money.

I have both too, and use them for work. I mostly use the small one, usually when I'm doing something up close in a machine, and the bigger one i use when the power goes out or I need to see anything more than 10 feet away. I took the big one apart yesterday to see if it would be easily modded with a new led, and it seems to be pretty easy. There is a really large aluminum heatsink and it shouldnt take more than 10 minutes to mod. like TheVat said, there are better lights for the money though. I do like the rechargeable batteries, but most lights that take an 18650 are just as good/better.
