I am looking for a product that will pull double duty between running & biking.... I've researched this page & researched lights... This is what I've come up with

1) Lupine Piko 3 w/Headbelt HD
2) Ay Up Twin Sports
3) Sliva Alpha 2
4) Light & Motion Stella 300

I have formulated my opinions about these products so that is why I have joined this site & posting my question... b/c I feel like there might be another lamp I am overlooking.

Thanks
Eric

I think for biking It might be best to ask on a mountain biking forum. MTBR.com has a ton of reviews and know the lighting requirement needed for fast technical trails at night.

By the way those German made Lupine's are beautifully made

Sorry CPF, Just trying to help

Some more info would help us help you...Total runtime needed? Running/biking in total darkness/on City streets/both? Have you actually run with a head lamp before? Are you against with running with something in your hands (i.e. hand held flashlight)? You posted headlamps with some large output, so I'm guessing that is your preference. I saw items 2, 3 and 4...with the Silva specs saying 300 lumens for 2.75 hours. That seems like too much light for your activities...but not sure what you really need.

Not sure about running, but from a biking perspective I generally dislike bike lights that are exclusively meant for biking only (i.e. special bands, battery packs, proprietary batteries, etc.). With flashlight technology leaping so much over the past 2 years, you could easily accommodate a standard flashlight, with AA size batteries, and take advantage of the latest technology, all the while saving yourself some money. (Well, that last part may not be true, as you will probably become addicted to flashlights like the rest of us and end up spending more money on lights than you ever thought you would. But for this specific application, in the short term, it really could save you some money.)

Again, not knowing your runtime needed or how much light you need/want, you could do a single AA or AAx2 flashlight; but you would need a good mount to attach it to your bike or helmet or both. Turns out they make one: TwoFish BikeBlocks. This way you could use standard AA batteries and take advantage of the Fenix LD20, Quark AAx2, Quark "X" AAx2, Jetbeam BA20...the list goes on and on...lots of choices here.

Someone started a "my wife needs a light for running" thread (or something like that) a few weeks ago that you should probably check out as it has some good info.

I use a Fenix LD20 with the TwoFish BikeBlocks and really like it. 100 lumens of light is plenty of output on neighborhood streets...and I can kick it up to 180 lumens if needed for busier streets, but find that I'm good with 100. I also use a Princeton EOS Bike Light in the flash mode for getting some general attention. I really like that the EOS is NOT strobe, but flashes about once every second or 1.5 seconds and find it good for general "notice me; I'm here; don't hit me" type of attention.

And with running, I doubt you would need more that 60 lumens. For running, I would have you also consider the Zebralight H51, or a right angle type light, as you can hold it while running with your fist closed on it, but still have it shine in front of you.

Also, check out varuscelli's (a CPF member) website (http://www.ruscelli.com/biking_fenix.htm) for another type of mounting option for your bike with some good output. The spacebar is very slick, and I have been seriously considering going that route, but my BikeBlocks are serving me well. He recently mounted a Klarus XT20 with two spacebars for a serious shiner...check out his post here for some pretty pics.

Good luck with your research.

wow... thanks for the info

runtime of around 4 hours....

I bike in complete darkness at times

Yes, I've ran with a Petzl headlamp for years... but I lost it the other day @ a race

I am not opposed to flashlights... I've never been comfortable holding a light while running and haven't seen a headband that looks comfortable for flashlights...

that is slick

If you want to consider a headband that will work with a flashlight, you might want to take a look at this thread:

Fenix Headband + Throw Light + ZebraLight Flood

I'm not sure whether the Fenix headband would offer the best solution for both running and biking, though. But, he Fenix headband offers some pretty versatile all-around usage options and I believe at least one person who posted to the above thread does use it for running.

By the way, did you mention what kind of biking? For the street or off road or combination of both?

Be sure to look at the threads for the new Zebralight headlamp offerings. You might want to consider an 18650 battery powered light like ZebraLight is getting ready to make available, but you would also need to invest in the 18650 batteries and a charger. The upcoming ZebraLight H600 or H600w (the "w" version having a more natural tint) might be great options for you (both are 18650 battery powered headlamps, soon to be released...we think). One of the good things about 18650 powered lights is that if you don't have to run them on high all the time, you'll get relatively long run times. They're bigger batteries that are good for powering bright lights at relatively long run times. Some lights that run on two CR123A batteries also work with a single 18650 battery. (The advantages of 18650 batteries including the rechargeable factor as well as the high capacity, with some now available at 3100mAH, which is pretty incredible.)

I've heard very good things about the Spark headlamps for multiple uses (including sports use) and I've seen discussion for bike use of the Spark ST6-500CW as a headlamp for cycling, although I think there are also other Spark headlamps that might be upcoming candidates (I'm not very knowledgeable about Spark headlamps, though). Here's some info from another thread in the headlamps forum:

Spark ST6-500CW headlamp as a bike light

You can also check out the Transportation Lighting Bicycle Forum here on CPF for more ideas.

Externally, you might check out the BikeForums.net (external to CPF, and maybe you already know of that forum), specifically their section on Electronics, Lighting, and Gadgets where similar discussions often take place.
