I have some questions on these drivers....

RV7 clone from DX (7880)

- why the hell all my 4 drivers from 3 different batches have an outpout of 350mA with a fully charged Eneloop? Is the Dx version a 350mA one or am I doing something wrong?
- how do I stop that beast from whining? I know it comes from the toroid coil, so I wish to change the freq by putting some thermal epoxy on/in it. Is that sensible?

(this driver is a 100-50-5% multimode)

By accident I installed a resistored (56ohm) twostage tailcap and I still got three levels but significantly lower. I mean wouldn't one expect to fall out of regulation and in direct drive with similar output in all levers? What can this tell us of the 3SM function and makeup?

The 7880 driver I got from DX about 6 months ago was only 350mA too on a Energizer 2500 (old Sanyo one).

Not sure what to say about the DX 7880, I've used many of the 3-level I got from RV7 himself and they've all been great.

I haven't had any problems with output or whine. The L1T that MrGman tested in an integrating sphere at close to 150lm had an RV7 driver and XR-E R2.

And that particular R2 had been involved in an "accident" and had already lost ~10% of the overall output.

Try Arctic Alumina Epoxy or aluminum oxide mixed with regular 2-ton epoxy.

The top board will move slightly and allow you to inject the epoxy around and into the coil.

Let us know how it turns out, I'm hoping you find a solution. I like these drivers.

They're able to equal or surpass total output and runtime of similar lights that run on a single lithium pimary while running on 1 AA, which is quite an accomplishment in my book.

Anyway thanks for the tip

I guess I was merging v1 and v2.

I've used both v1 and v2, the v1 has a top board, but v2 dosen't have the top board.

I'm tempted to locate a v1 board and run it against a v2 and see how the output and regulation compare. I've never checked it before.

Great drivers, and the price was right too :) I wish Gary/RV7 would come back to CPF :(

Michael's, 2-ton w/aluminum oxide potting idea is probably the best, for a compound that will flow around the coil on that particular driver. There are great potting compounds available that have a very low viscosity, but cost would be the issue, if you're only planning to pot only one or two drivers.

Hi Scott!

Yeah me too. I've suggested to Gary that he should come back, even talked to him about a project, but its a no go for him.

MJ has a HO 1AA driver out now. It has a little less output but is better regulated. I haven't gotten any yet but plan to soon.
