It does go a long time without needing batts, It gets limited use in my case as its only set up on my life vest and thankfully we haven't had any true night time water rescues.

I just saw these Adventure Lights brand "Guardian" lights on one the Shot Show 2009 videos. Looks pretty cool, sells for around $14 and they sell an optional dog collar attachment. Here's a link to the YouTube video.

Skyeye, check out Planet Bike's SuperFlash LED blinker. It's main purpose is for biking, but it's unique flashing pattern (it's similar to the flashing pattern on those LED lightbars on police cruisers) makes it useful for plenty of other applications.

Bought one of those ^^^ based on Green's post. I walk home from a commuter rail stop at night and this time of year, between the darkness and the narrowness of the roads due to snow/ice, I really need good lights. This one is great. One huge red LED alternating with two smaller ones. (I bought the new "stealth" flavor which has a clear cover rather than red...hmmm, not sure what's "stealth" but I liked its looks.) Price was under $20 from Am@zon. Works well clipped on my bag.

Inova 24/7 would be my first thought, I have been clipping them to my kids for a couple years to keep an eye on them while we are in a public campground with great results.
I can not comment on what would happen in an area that has more ambient light though. Another thing, I have had the same battery in that 24/7 since I owned it.

Pyd, my 24/7 also has the original battery.

...actually, that's not entirely true, I had to send it in for warranty, and I can't remember if the replacement light came with a new battery, or if I just used the original battery (which I kept). :shrug:

I've got a pair of the 24/7s, and they're great. But they're >2x the price of the PlanetBike and on my bag the clip is a little less secure. There is not question that the full flash is awesome, however. The "civilian" version is even better than the "law enforcement" version IMO (I have both; YMMV).
