I recently bought an older style SF M2 with the ribs/fins, but it does not have any of the patent numbers on the body. Were M2s mader without these numbers?

Unlike my C2, the M2's bezel does not have the caution label, the bottom surface of the body opposite the clip is rounded, and the tailcap does not have milled surfaces around the knurling. Also, the "Surefire" logo on the body is not real crisp.

I've got the older M2 version like yours and the bezel does indeed have the "Caution Hot Surface" printed on it. Does the flat side of the battery tube say Millennium Series M2 Centurion on the opposite side of the Surefire logo and S/N?

If you could post some pics it would help.

The flat side of the battery tube says Millennium Series M2 CENTURION. On the other side of the tube, the Surefire logo and S/N are upside down compared to the writing on the other side of the body. In other words, the engraving on both sides are not oriented the same when referenced to the clip.

Does this sound right?

I wish I could load some pictures, but I can't right now.

hmm Sounds like you got an early M2. So there are only three flats right? two with engraving and one for the pocket clip? Newer M2/C2 bodies have 4 flats.

Yes, only three flats. What about the fact that the engraving isn't oriented the same? I haven't seen that on any of my other SFs.

Is this the one that we discuss here

The color match is not nearly as bad as the above picture would lead you to believe. Note that the bottom of the body is rounded.

Above is a better shot showing the rounded body. Forgive the errant carpet thread by the grip ring. Note that the engraving on this side is upside down relative to the engraving on the opposite side (pocket clip is at bottom). The next picture is a close-up of the engraving. Was this par for the course??

Note the lack of a thin milled band on the sides of the knurling on the tailcap. The light was supposed to be mint ... :thumbsdow

Sorry for the fuzziness of the above picture. I hope you get the jist of the engraving on the tailcap.

So, what do I have here?

Thanks for the photos.
Does the TailCap have the LockOut (disable) feature?
I'd have to check my photo archive but is rare to see a natural HA TailCap without the bands.

The body looks to be from any original, original M2 (ie one that did not come with the shock isolated bezel). I'll have to check mine to see if the serial number is of the same order.
My initial feeling is that it is a really old M2, either an original one with the shock isolated bezel added later, or one of the first with it as standard.
The TailCap is interesting though... How many o-rings does the body have on the TailCap-end?

As for the 'upside down' etching - that's not uncommon - it came from one of the laser etching operators being left-handed.
The slightly faded etching on the SureFire logo & serial, and the 'shadow' on the logo itself. - that's not unheard of either in the past.

Al, Thanks for the reply.

I believe so ... I can rotate the tailcap to the point where the light will not come on when pressing the momentary button. Both o-rings are still covered.

There are two o-rings installed.

I have a C2 with the same lock-out tail cap (no milled bands bordering the knurling). If I remember correctly, my C2 was delivered with a defective tail cap. It felt like a burr in the button and would hang up sometimes not activating the light when pushed. The non-milled (bands) tail cap currently installed was Surefire's replacement that they sent me via warranty. This was on the order of 5 years ago and the replacement tail cap has functioned flawlessly.

Out of curiosity, I went through my Surefire parts and inspected all the tail caps. Every tail cap has the bordering bands with exception to the LOTC on my C2 and the the non-LOTC / large button from my 9Z purchased over a dozen years ago. The knurling on the LOTC however is "raised". The knurling on the non-LOTC from the 9Z is on even plane or perhaps slightly recessed.
