Even more damning for NASA is that the Associated Press through the freedom in information act has discovered that similar damage from the insulation has occurred before during an Atlantis flight, and NASA withheld the information even from the astronauts. We'll have to see what this evolves into.

Anyone know the composition of the foam or an URL for a good site on it?

I'm wondering if the foam might not be impproved by embedding short lengths of carbon fiber in it.

I live in Fort Worth and personally saw the STS-107 re-entry. I observed "glittering" objects coming off the shuttle and trailing it, but I didn't realize at that moment what I was really seeing. A few minutes later, watching the news, I realized I had seen part of the breakup. A memory, that will be with me forever.
