Why do you call flashlights that are silver in color, pewter? Is it just some weird naming convention that just 'stuck'? Pewter is not a color!

Pewter is a shade. Pewter is short for "pewter silver".

Ex: There are many shades of red. Some are refered to as 'fire engine' red, 'hooker' red, 'blood' red.

Actually, Merriam Websters Dictionary refers to it as an actual color (a bluish grey).

beside, maglite has lots of silver of different shades. See the recent posts regarding mag. To make it easier to differentiate them (rather than saying old silver, light silver, a bit silver etc), some naming is given to them like silver for actual looking silver, pewter for darker ones, charcoal, etc etc

It's just a "describing" color, just like "titanium colored". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

BTW, to me, "pewter" is also a little darker than "silver"... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yeah, pewter the material is darker and duller than silver. I think Mag actually calls it 'gray', don't they?

But of the ~16.67 million colors, who's to say one isn't actually called pewter? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If gold is gold and silver is silver, why can't pewter be pewter? A lot of folks use titanium and pewter interchangeably, sometimes with titanium having a greenish tint.
