what are some of the best single AAA lights out on the market now??
My personal AAAx1 rotation:
1) Lumapower LM21 EDC
2) Streamlight Nano (not the two cell model)

Edit: Slip of the keyboard! Dgbrookman caught me! I catch myself saying Streamlight Nano when I mean
Streamlight Microstream AAAx1.
I'm man enough to leave this in place. Good catch! Please substitute SL-MS-AAAx1 for where I say SL-N. This post is otherwise untouched out of integrity. I respect it when other people do it, so I'll walk the walk and talk the talk.

LM21: You can drop in the li-ion AAA-sized 3.7V rechargables, it's compatible! Only downside is that low mode whines with this battery option. It also works with regular AAA. It's very lightweight. It has nice semi-custom touches; glow-in-the-dark forward-click tail switch (momentary-on,) glow-in-the-dark o-ring between the lens and head bezel. The beam is very, very floody. With the versatility, it's a great EDC or backup to a CR123x1 tac light. It has a ridiculous runtime on low mode, actual output and runtimes vary wildly depending on battery strength and type. The beam is a touch blue for me and the pocket clip is a little flimsy. Fairly cheap for a such a full-featured light.
LM21 summary: I give it a 4.5 out of 5 only because it doesn't also start fires with the beam, nor can it be used to arc-weld with the battery pack.
SL-Nano: I love this one for the neutral tint and simplicity of operation. Also forward-clicky with momentary on. Not really compatible with the 3.7 aaa-size rechargables as I have had several and some don't power on with the 3.7v. Runtime of about 1.5 hrs at 20-28 lumens or so off of non-lions. Beam focus is more of a thrower. Not too bright to blind yourself at close range unless using the 3.7s with totally night-adjusted vision at extreme close range, bright enough to get the point if it's dark enough. Excellent two-way clip, makes a nice sleeve light for hands free. The clip is my favorite design of all my little lights with a pocket clip. Love that 2-way! Cheapish, very widely available, possibly with a free knife.
SL-N summary: 4 out of 5 because it could honestly be a touch brighter, but it performs well for what it is. If you're looking for floody, this isn't the AAAx1 for you. If you're looking for super-lumens, look elsewhere. Some of them just won't power on with lions. An older SL-N body is valuable as the head is removable; SL changed the design and now you can't remove the head. The SL-N with removable head legos with (some?) Maratac AAA stuff. I've never had one die on me.
Basically, this and a photon freedom micro 2 has me covered for lightweight short-range EDC-type lighting situations. Where the SL-N isn't quite right, the LM21 fits perfectly. Both are excellent values for the money, with the LM21 being slightly higher end... neither are unaffordable by any means.
