No instructors and very few skydivers jump anymore without a very reliable electronic device that senses your freefall speed and compares it with your altitude. At a vertical decent rate above that under canopy and below a preset altitude the device will automatically open the reserve parachute, also designed to be extremely reliable and like the main, manuverable to avoid obstacles and land softly.

Is there any kind of requirement for that kind of safety device, or just good common practice?
Just wondering about the story I saw, on some extreme video kind of show, where they had what was to be the youngest skydiver making his first jump, caught on video.
Apparently he did freeze up, and sadly never pulled his cord, as the camera rolled and his family watched. It would seem that the safety device should have been an mandatory requirement in that situation-

For night jumps I believe he has considered using LEDs on his suit or equipment. I know he has used a strobe on his helmet. I'm pretty sure he prefers intense cyalumes. Quick, dependable break-and-tape.

The videos are on VHS. Maybe I should consider converting them to digital.

On flashlights I can't remember exactly what he likes. I recall he's got a tent light he likes. These people camp out on or near the tarmac. They have been know to have some pretty good parties. Campfires, pig roasts, cold ones, stories, jokes and practical jokes. Apparantly many young women enjoy the sport too and they are accepted as equals depending on experience. Sound like a great time to me.

I think in relative work they like to have long timers come in late. He's told me he will come in fairly hot then hover. He'll ease into the slip stream or draft. This causes him to pick up a lot of speed. He's experienced enough that he can manuever quickly and safely into a soft approach by doing this.

Here's a 74 attempt as it was forming. Seems I recall they got real close but there was a one hand connection that didn't hook? I really can't remember. When it's time to knock it off the people in the center kick their legs back and forth as a signal. The other members release and track away.

Just remember two things: 1) for ripcord or pilot chute deployment: Your life is in your hands--->literally! 2) Any landing you can walk awa from was a good one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ensure that your chute has an Automatic Activation Device (AAD). That will ensure that if you do pass out that your reserve chute will deploy if you go passed a pre-set altitude at a specific speed, something like 1,000 ft. AGL at terminal velocity.
