SL 3aa Lux with lithiums?

Anyone try this already? Fry the lux? Lot brighter? Huh? Huh? Huh? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No, I haven't tried it, but I wish someone would, and report.
 
I asked a while back and nobody had tried that yet... I was advised not to and have not tried myself....too scared /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

I wish somebody would try.

Is the reason voltage or current??? If there is a resistor in there to regulate current, wouldn't that protect the Lux from over current? And if it's voltage, how much higher voltage would it be? If you knew you had a high vf Luxeon what would it have to be?
 
OK already. I did it !

Switched back and forth a few times between fresh Energizer Photo Lithiums, and fresh Energizer alkalines. Dark twelve foot closet with my handy yard stick.

My 3AA Lux has a bright white center (with Alkalines), with a fading greenish spill. The bright white hot spot is about 15 " at ten feet(measured).

Lithiums are definitely brighter; the bright hot spot now measurers about 19", with increased spill, though still greenish. No magic smoke in about 5 minutes run. No heat noticed.

My SL TL-2 LED, with its smaller hot spot, has always out thrown my 3AA . Now they appear to be at about equal, though the 3AA has a larger hot spot. A definite brightness difference here with the AA Lithiums.

The lighter weight of the AA Lithiums is apparent.

I'm going to leave the Lithiums in the 3AA, and try a more extensive test tonight in REAL darkness. I have a pool house about 80 feet from my back door. It'll be my laboratory.

I wish I had tried this earlier. I bought eight of the AA Lithiums with the idea of using them in my CMG Ultras, but they have a great run time anyway.
 
I have a Micronta Multimeter. If someone will walk me through how to do it, I'll try to measure mA through the Luxeon with different feeds. I can't tell plus/minus on the mounted Lux with the bezel/reflector off.

Never done this before.

I think I did it right. I'm getting 330 mA with the Alkalines, and 425 mA with the Lithiums.

Night time test against pool house. Pretty negligable difference in perceived brightness.

My personal conclusion, if I don't need the cold resistance, or longevity of the Lithiums, stay with Alkalines.
 
I don't know if SL has changed what they were putting in their lights but a N3L low dome came out of mine. It would be great if they are now supplied with high domes.
