I'm going to order lights from Lummi, they use small li-ions, 10180 & 14250. Currently I don't have any lights using smaller cells than 123, but I'm also looking for RCR2 now.

These cells only exist in unprotected, I guess it just isn't possible to add a protection because the size of the cells is so small. Before I started with li-ion, I informed myself about the dangers and try to keep it as safe as possible, so I also know how to handle and treat the small cells.

I asked Lummi about the cells, Rob tols me he didn't know of any problems, a quick search on CPF didn't bring problems up neither. I wonder if the small cells are more secure as bigger ones, perhaps because of their size of if their usage is so rare, that problems haven't occured (or documented) yet?

The 10440 is unprotected as well, and I already read a lot about them, mainly people really recommended not to use them in AAA lights...

I am no expert, but from my asking around, using a low output charger is the safest bet.
I ordered the 100mA USB charger from Sabre, and I use the Nano that Rob supplies.
I have watched the batteries closely for heat, and both these chargers don't heat up the batteries.
An electric guru I know said, it was the low amps going INTO the battery that is important, as well as the cut off when full.

Be cautious, but not afraid of these things and you should be fine.
