I am having a hard time finding switches for my headlamp projects. Does anyone know of a good source?

For my project I would like a 1-2-3-0 with two sets of terminals. A 1-2-3-4-0, would be even better. Pushbutton would be best, but a SMALL slider could work. It would need to be at least somewhat water resistant. A toggle (the only style I can find with waterproofing boots) is just going to come on in my pack.

Any advice as to where to look. Searching has got me nowhere.

Those are good shops. They have a lot of switches, just not the ones I am looking for.

Check at DigiKey.com for Judco 524PB
Look at the bottom of this Catalog page (and they have rubber boots too)
It is the closest I've found, though I still havent ordered any...

If you find anything better please tell us!

I too am looking for some switches like this. Pushbutton would be great, or mini slide. I found some 4 position mini slides on ebay (lot of 50, would be willing to split, PM me if interested). What I am really looking for is 5 position (off and 4 selections).

It will be hard to find that kind of switch without going rotary. Won't the sliders just connect adjoining pins, or would they connect to a common?

Oh, and Crux, that was EXACTLY what I was looking for until about a week ago when I decided to add another light to my headlamp design. Maybe it will have to be on its own switch. I might order a few anyways.

I found a flashlight at Wal-Mart that I think has a 1-2-3-0 single position switch. It will be a bear to mount and not mutch fun to run with gloves or mud on my hands. I hate paying $10 for a cheap switch that I know will be hard to mount.

Another place you may try is mouser.com, they have an interesting assortment of switches

what about a multi-switch (like 4 switches that are interlocked)? i've seen those pretty small, yet if done right you could operate with gloves.... else.. a rotary internal swtich with push-button outer.. BCD switch like the SCSI selector switch.

i would like a simple tiny rotary switch to allow three light levels. i prefer a mechanical switch...maybe i can find one on one of the sites posted.

the only switches i have found so far are way too big.

i want to use one to create a small 1-aa madmax/badboy multi-level EDC. might use an infinity body, cram a madmax into the head, and use the rotary switch at the tail.
something like that, anyway.

dare to dream!

the only rotary switches I have found that small you need a screwdriver to turn them.

The smallest rotart switch I have is a grayhill 1p4t measuring 3/4 in diameter and about 1/2 inch thick.

Before you get too excited about size, consider current capacity of the contacts. Most nifty little switches are rated for a few dozen mA. Switching the kinds of currents some folks tend to is a no-no. IMO, Lynx Arc is spot on, Grayhill is the place to start. You might also find a 'three way' table lamp switch that would work.

Yer on your own with boots or o-rings as far as sealing it up.

yes, capacity can be a problem. I was looking at grayhill site and a lot of their rotary switches are only rated at 250ma so either you have to use it to drive a power transistor to drive the light or get a higher capacity switch for luxeons and etc, or go with a larger more robust switch... OR perhaps even a tiny relay?

Okay, the SPTT switch I got from the flashlight might have worked. But it melted when I tried to desolder it from the board it was soldered on. It was dimmensionally identical to the SPDT switch in th headlamp I was moding. Oh, well. I don't have $10 to buy another one, so I made due with with I had. It wouldn't have done what I really wanted, anyways as it was a single position switch.

For my next big project, I think I will get some of those switches from Digikey. Thanks Crux.

OK, I am going to be ordering some online. these are SP4T small slide switches. They were in batches of 50. I would be willing to sell some off in small batches. PM me if interested.

It doesn't hurt my feelings any, but you would proabbly do well to start your own thread anyways. I suspect this thread has past its prime and you will not recieve the attention you seek from it.

How's that for a worthless bump?
