I bought this 4-7/8" Chinese made Smith & Wesson three N cell three LED light at my local sporting goods store. It has the whitest (not brightest) beam I've seen. How can a cheap light do that?

You are "in denial" about the quality of the light I see. One can get a dorcy AAA at wal mart for 6 bucks and get great quality and whiteness too. Curious why they would use 3 N cells... is it a regular 5 mm LED?

LED lights are much whiter then incandescent lights.

Chances are the S&W and Dorcy's were both made in the same factory. Look at the tail switch.

Dorcy makes a triple led single AA cell for only about $10, if you can find it at Target or anywhere else. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I assume they are 5mm LED's. Definitely not Luxeons. Are there other LEDs out there that are mass-marketed? I have the single AAA Dorcy and BOTH of the 2AA-four LED Dorcys as a matter of fact. They are very different in quality of design and construction than this S&W. And the beam is whiter and softer on the S&W. Are the Dorcys made in China BTW?

I have a S&W 3 LED light that runs on 2 AA batteries. Its called the Galaxy and is made in China. IT says on the package, "New improved styleuses 2AA batteries". I have 3 of them in fact. A black bodied one with 3 white LED's, a blue bodied one that has 3 blue LED's, and a red bodied one with 3 red LED's. They look just like Dorcys to me, at least the ones I have seen at Target. I got them off of Ebay as a package deal for $28.99 and they were brand new still sealed in a clamshell. I think after shipping I had about $12 a piece in them. My 6 year old loves them. In fact for $12 I like them pretty good myself. The white LED one is a little on the blue side. Its beam looks like the color of an Infinity Ultra.
Here is one from a webpage. I would not give this much for one though. http://www.midwayautosupply.com/detailedproductdescription.asp?9223

I think I've seen that particular 2 AA S&W light. It was priced at 19.95 "on sale" here! Looks like you got a great deal! (BTW, do you think it's worth 19.95-should I buy?)

I should have said that the bodies look just like Dorcy's, especially the tailcap. The head is of course different. And thank you indenial, I think it was a pretty good deal.
Just saw your question indenial. I dont know if I would buy it for $19.95 or not. I think you can get a Dorcy 2AA 4 LED at Target for about $17. That would be a better deal I think.

I have a S&W Galaxy that uses three N cells, has a steady-on, and a blink feature.
My page about the Galaxy is right here if anybody is interested.
In my opinion, it isn't the best flashlight you can buy, but it isn't a total POS either.
I believe I gave it a rating of 3 stars out of a possible 5.

From my website, here's the brief explanation of the 3-star rating:

Recommended for general purpose use. Flashlight is probably weather resistant, and is reasonably sturdy and bright enough to be truly useful. A flashlight with this rating may have some other flaws, but nothing that would cause the light to not function when needed.

Nice review LED and I'd agree assuming we're dealing with the same light. Other than the blink function, which mine does not have, it's identical.

The S&W LED lights I've seen at sporting goods stores don't look as... hackneyed... as the one pictured above. I've only seen the 2AA version - which is solid-looking with consistent styling.

Makes me wonder if the above is a knockoff.

I used to have the one LedMuseum mentions.... it went at a garage sale as I just couldn't find a lot to love about it.

I've seen the 2AA 3LED S&W at Academy, and I don't remember it looking like the pic.

Unfortunately, I already have both both versions of the Dorcy 2AA. The S&W 2AA seems better constructed from what I could see in the store. It wouldn't take much to convince an flashaholic like myself to buy one!

And regarding my 3N model, it definitely is not as well constructed as the 2AA model. It does, however, put out an excellent beam for its size and class.
