Has anyone done this?

1 Osram 64458s
2x 8 cell 9.6V NiMh RC car battery packs

in a body like this:

Lots of these little lanterns have thin cheap spun aluminum reflectors, attach a bi-pin holder to the backside of it, upgrade the switch, and change out the plastic bubble lens for glass and you could have one heck of a short burst 10K Lumen shotgun.

I was just about to... maybe later this year. I need to find a good host, with a good reflector.

One problem would be that my charger can only handle 14 nimh cells.

That's why the two RC car packs. Wire them series in the light with a pigtail. Then unplug and charge seperately with a standard RC charger outside the body.

This could be really cool in one of those old all-metal deals.

I have to admit, I love goofing around with the box style 6V lantern. But my
mods are low power, long run time. The plastic plate used in these devices won't tolerate much heat.

Another issue is the bi-pin holder - the lamp filament will be a bit displaced
from it's usual position and I don't see how it could be properly focused. At
any rate, have fun if you decide to go for it.

That looks like AWR's HD!
Is that lantern converted to LED since you say that you like extended
runtime? I really cant tell with the picture you posted.

On a similar light, I wired in a 6-cell AA holder, added Eneloops, and a Sears 6v rechargeable lamp. Bright. Very bright. Good luck with your mod.

Light on the left uses a regular 4 cell bulb. I made a 4.8V, 14AH battery using Nimh F cells from Tenergy. Should run for a solid 15 hours. Added LM317 and resistor so it can remain on constant trickle charge. As you noted, light on the right uses AWR Hotdriver set to 7.2 volts, so I mildly overdrive a 6V ican lamp with it. Battery is a two cell Li-Ion pack, built in charging jack on that too. Run time is 6+ hours.
